It was great to see everyone out there and meet some new folks as well. Given the lack of sleep and mechanical issues I can't say I was turning any fast laps but it was fun none the less. At least I know what I need to concentrate on next with my build to improve reliability...

Giant photo dump. There are some killer shots of afm, gesso, eo2k, cxracer, and turbofan in there. Pick out your favorites and share them.

These are free to use obviously

(about an hour till they are all uploaded)

Agreed this was the first time in 3 years I really wanted to buy the pictures from Got Blue Milk, but their prices are a little ridiculous.

Also my dad was the one talking to your dad and brother.

MiataMan00 - yea, I remember that black NA making good time - he was fast consistently. If it wasn't for cars going off track and some very slow drivers we might have had faster/cleaner laps.

There was a silver NB with hard top that would just not give a point by. My NB2 is all stock power and I really felt it every time going from turn 5 all the way to corckscrew. Oh well, it was a ton of fun anyway.

D was MUCH WORSE than C, and C wasn't all that great anyway. The lack of point-bys was simply infuriating. I will admit that I'm not willing to actually give a point-by UNTIL we reach a section of track where we are ALLOWED to pass I'm one of those guys who absolutely will not push someone to give me a point OUTSIDE of the defined passing zone. The zones are there for a reason, and chances are people were put in groups for a reason. This is supposed to be a fun event and crowding people out of their comfort zone is not at all fun. Rules exist so everyone knows what to expect.

I distinctly remember myself yelling at one of the boosted Exocets "Ride my quarter all you want but ************ but I'm not going to point you buy on the inside of 9!" I wonder if the gopro picked that up. I pointed him by between 10 & 11 as per da rules.

MiataMan00 I feel like we both had too much power for C. The difference is that you can actually drive where as I'm still trying to find my limits. Please don't take this comment as me calling you out, because I'm not. I'm glad you got to come out and play, and hopefully you'll have more fun in B next year. If I can get my **** together and actually do some trackday hours under my belt this year I'll see you out there. I know Ian keeps pushing me towards B

It had nothing to do with the gridding. It had to do with the people who shouldn't be in C registering for C.

In the last session I started first in the fast lane. I got 1 clean lap...just one. Before I caught the back of the slow lane.

That's a good approach, and - as an instructor - thank you for following the rules, passing zones, and driving safely. I invited MiataMan, but of course this is an open invite to any local, to drive with another group I instruct with called SpeedSF. We are at Laguna about a dozen times a year, including next Friday 10/14! Prices are low-to-fair, instruction is available, there are lots of Miatas, and they also have a Time Attack program which gives users an extra session and compares times across a variety of cars based on accumulated points. Small prizes and free track time are some of the awards, but it's a fun, low-stress, totally collaborative environment of HPDE-ers and lots of Miata-brothers and sisters.

I gridded up in the slow lane each time not knowing how well the car was going to do. I had traffic and made sure I was really filling some mirrors to get point-bys but I wasn't going to pass unless we were on a straight even if I got the point by early. I knew I was inconsistent both in my current driving ability (rusty) and power output so I wasn't stressing and I was happy to point people by who were faster.

Where I had an issue was how they let us onto the track. They let everyone go out in a big conga line and it took 2-3 laps before you could make it past the 3-4 really slow drivers and get spread out a bit.

I had a guy who came up to me after one of the sessions. I had given a point by after 11 but he didn't come around and he wanted me to lift. Well I did lift (all the way off the gas and just coasted) but honestly he could have only have passed if I put on the brakes and pulled over. The problem was he just wasn't close enough on my bumper to come around. I totally understand where he was coming from because I was there too when I had stock 1.6 power and better handling skills but I knew I couldn't pass higher horsepower cars unless I was right up on them for a few corners and jumped around as soon as I got the point by. It was Doug Gale from Track Masters who actually taught me that it is appropriate to "fill someone's mirrors" before you can expect to get a point by and be able to actually capitalize on it.

I'm kinda torn on what was going on in Group D. It was so much better than what I experienced in the beginning groups the previous 2 years, but I'm also the target audience for the group, I have 4 track days now and 3 of them were at Laguna Seca. Additionally my 01 is stock power wise (I don't really count the warm air intake), so clearly I wasn't passing people on power alone. I would typically only chase down people near the end of the sessions when a conga line had formed. One of the biggest thing's that bothered me is we'd come up on a yellow zone and I'd have 2-3 cars run right up on my bumper not even slowing down for cars spun off track or the tow truck. Then the car would be all over my bumper for the 2-3 corners with yellow flags seemingly annoyed I had followed the flagger's instructions and that I wouldn't point them by until the next approved passing zone not under a yellow flag. Then we'd complete a lap come back up to the yellow zone again and the same thing would occur.

The only other thing was more than once someone would seem to catch me, I'd point by, lift slightly, but then they wouldn't pass. Now my already slow straight line car is going slower meaning more cars have caught 2 cars. At this point I'm basically driving in my mirrors trying to get the cars past me who have more HP or who are carrying more speed through the corners. I probably worried too much about pointing people past me which slowed down my driving. I still had a lot of fun and would gladly run Group D again, This is always the issue with this event and Laguna Seca in general, cars with power really run down those without it.

I had a spec miata try and nose me out in the corkscrew. The guy was literally trying to race me. I was stuck behind somebody, and he would come up to my drivers door window, in the braking zones.

It was bullshit

Had a similar experience with the spec Miata in C. I also caught him and got no point by from him down the entire front straight.

That picture encapsulates 3/4 of my problems in Saturday C. The guy in the stock red MSM didn't point anyone by. I would come up on 6-8 cars stacked up behind him. He did the same thing last year.

You probably saw me spun into the dirt at 6 in the afternoon session Saturday, when they let B and C out together.

And I gave you the point by on the straight one session.

I threw a big *** roundel on each side with #14

Haha yes I did. Getting pulled onto the tow truck? I might have video of it.

Didn't realize that was you. You should have come and parked/partied with us.

Yep, that was I! Still not quite sure what happened and I didn't have my camera going. I'm sure it had something to do with my slow hands. Post up vids if you have them.

I dropped by to say hi to Ed, but my whole day was sorta wonky. Twibs sprung an e85 induced fuel leak on the way down, we ended up late for drivers meeting, had check in issues, then after I came off the first session I couldn't get my car to idle right. It was hung up at 3k. Spent half the day checking out MS settings trying to fix it. Ended up being the little Allen screw on the junk2 vibrating out so the throttle couldn't close all the way.

I managed a 1:51 with a giant lift out of 6 for traffic, with a passenger.
