Went back to the track today

This time to run the car in a straight line for the first time. Never have been able to sixty a car, and still can't, but had fun nonetheless despite going 1-2-5 not once but twice, bouncing off 3rd a couple times, red light-ed once, etc. Stellar night.

Ran the first few times at 9-10psi and could not get better than mid 15s, then decided to take my chances and ran 12-13 clutch-slipping psi. Was able to feather the throttle through the worst of it and ended up with a best run of 14.9 at 101mph with a 2.6 60' lol. At least a shitty launch keeps stuff from breaking. Density altitude at the track is usually in the 4600' area, but tonight for some reason it wasn't printed on the slips.

This is at the same track that had the lapping day last weekend...front straight is the dragstrip, turn one gets you on the return road. Reminded me of how I'd rather be turning corners than hammering on it down a drag strip.

ouch

The good news is with a 101mph trap speed, if your launching improves and you can get your 60ft below 2 sec, you probably got a low to mid 13 second car.

I went into thread with a different definition of track...

I went into this thread with a different definition of slow.

LOL @ drag racing. The best part is the turn around, kick it out and swang. Best part.

Yea, who would have fun running 15's all night on an aftermarket boosted car.

18psi 09-10-2011 01:13 PM

needs MOAR BOOST

matthewdesigns 09-10-2011 01:40 PM

Yeah, the failboat was at full steam last night. I really wanted to just get an idea of traps vs weight so I could get a rough estimate of whp without paying for dyno time. First and probably last time I'll run it on a 1/4 mile strip.

Definitely needs moar boost, but needs more clutch before that. Last run of the night 3rd gear spun right out of the clutch at 12psi, so yeah.

On a somewhat related note, I just picked up a set of rear 1.8 caliper brackets, so I'm inching my way towards better brakes for the next time I'm at the other kind of track day.

Were you on the stock clutch? Mine broke loose at anything over 7psi, but my FM Level 1 works great.

matthewdesigns 09-10-2011 01:52 PM

Stock clutch as far as I know. I have not had it apart yet to check, but that's right behind brakes on the to-do list. I've run as much as 14psi on it, but that's where the slipping started, backed down to 12psi, then 11, now I'm at 9ish. Last night definitely was not kind to it.

I was thinking FM1 as a replacement. You obviously like it. Have you had it up past 12psi?

18psi 09-10-2011 01:54 PM

Mine spun the stock clutch past 7psi as well. Violently.
Dont worry about your time/trap too much either. We're just busting your balls.
Just get an FM2 in case you want more torque later.

Negative. You'll break stuff faster this way. Or by shitty do you mean slow? Like slow clutch slipping or wheel hopping slow launches? Never mind, I saw your clutch issues. That's how I ruined my last one, lol!

Important thing is that you had fun. I am DYING to get closer to a track so I can finally start dusting off my drag racing cobwebs :vash:

Yes, I hit 15 psi on it. That's 15 psi with a small turbo though, and like 210 wtq. Keep in mind, it's not about boost, it's about cfm's. 15psi on a GT2554 is much different than 15 psi on a GT3071. The FM level 1 is rated at 318ft/lbs, so you should be good to go.

matthewdesigns 09-10-2011 02:09 PM

Yeah, shitty launch as in spinning, so the drivetrain is not getting a really hard hit. No wheel hop at all thankfully. And this is a ball-busting place so that's to be expected lol...I actually thought I'd get it a lot worse :giggle:

And just like everyone else says, I'm not looking to make more power than the stock bottom end can handle, so the FM1 sounds fine for that if it's rated at 318tq. If I end up building a motor for more power then I'll do a different clutch at that point. I gotcha on the airflow vs psi...my brain is still stuck in tard mode from everyone last night asking me "yo man how much boost you running".

Seefo 09-21-2011 09:34 PM

other type of track sounds more fun :/ still break stuff over there too ;)
