10-23-10 SV @ Buttonwillow 3rd & 4th sesssion

It was a great day to run. Temps in the low 70's and the track was dry. I guess it was raining a couple days before so the ground was still muddy, but since I had a garage and didn't plan on any off track excursions (driving @ 8/10 usually ensures I keep 4 wheels on track) this was not an issue.

I only got to video the 3rd and 4th session of the day (I didn't stay for the 5th in that I had to get back home for a Halloween party I committed to). I thought I had set up the video camera correctly, but I found in the middle of the 3rd session I hadn't. Just before the start of the video, I had just dropped a passenger off in the hot pits (one of many, I really need to start charging for rides, lol) and asked him if the camera light was on. I wasn't and he set it up so it would work OK. The end of the video comes up 2 laps short of the checker. I didn't get to run both laps in that just after the bus stop, I went from 12 lbs of boost to 0 @ WOT. I drove it back to the garage and found that my BOV clamp had come loose and the BOV fell off the charge pipe and was resting between the fan shroud and roll bar with the vacuum line still attached. A 2 min. fix.

There were allot of off's during the event, in all run groups which shows me that the "red mist" of track driving had ahold of too many people out there. During the 2nd session on the 3rd lap, I was exiting riverside into Phil Hill and @ the flag station the yellow was out, but not waving. I was hitting 102 mph into the brake zone for Phil Hill so I clamped hard on the binders and brought it down to 60 at the crest of Phil hill (well below what I usually do which is 72 to 75 mph) when all I see is a black S2K parked sideways @ the apex of the exit of Phil Hill. I turn hard right (wrong thing to do but I really had no choice) and begin my drift down the backside of Phil Hill with my ass end of the Miata square in the sites of a round eyed kid. I was in third so floor the gas, the back end squats, the tires grab tarmac and I sling shot by the kid, missing him by 5 yards. All the while managing to stay on track. There is now a new crease in the bottom of my carbon fiber seats. Still, I stayed out for the rest of the session. Good fun none the less.

It was a TL that was set-up very well. I talked to the driver who was a very nice guy and well versed in running CW13. I was in front of him from when the session started but I slowed down to let him get in front on the straight. On some areas of the track, he was faster than I was, like @ Phil Hill and the exit of the sweeper. He got a bit overzealous @ Sunset and went off. The SD card on the camera stopped just after the Buttonhook, so I ended the scene @ the end of the straight. There were 2 more laps in the session where he decided to stay behind me. Too much red mist in his eyes.

Nope, GT2860. You were probably hearing the Quaife gear set in the video.
