Yeah, I wasn't sure why the trunk would limit the effectiveness of such a setup. I think it was a misunderstanding.

I mean a ported box in the trunk is not a super combination. if you're just opening up holes (not holes attached to the internal volume of the sub box), then it's fine. though not really needed since bass likes to go through thin sheet metal just fine.

Actually it's closer to 58Hz/.67 Q but your specs should work. :hustler:

I have a JL 8" Microsub in my subaru that sounds pretty good. I wish I knew more about this kind of stuff.

smart alek! what do you want to know?

944obscene 10-01-2008 12:03 PM

Okay, I think we're still misunderstanding each other. Never mind though. I'll just go read like a good little girl and come back when I know what I'm looking for. :)

sealed box vs. ported box?

Braineack 10-01-2008 01:33 PM

I believe he wants to do something like this:

http://forum.miata.net/vb/showpost.p...80&postcount=5

Just wanted to follow up.

I used this speaker in the sealed box for a few weeks in the miata. I was never really happy with the performace of the speaker/box/car combo. It sounded just ok with the hardtop on, a little better with the doors open, but when you were underway the bass just wasn't there. Take the hardtop off and I give up even hearing the speaker. Needless to say, I was unhappy, dissapointed and even embarrased to show my coworkers/friends. All that money time for a sub amp combo and it just kinda sucked.

So I fired up my Winisd and decided to spec out a ported box. THE BEST IDEA EVAR.

I had to sacrafice the spare tire to get the box to fit, but I fabbed up a 1.18 cubic foot box, threw a 3" diamerter aero port 17 inches into the box, and fired the sub forward with the port firing to the pass side. Tuned to 29/30hz.

It rocks, top up/down, windows up/down it does not matter. This sounds soo much better. I was able to turn my gains down and get even more sound then was ever possable with the sealed box.

Now I can bump in public and not be embarrased.
but pretend "firing to the passenger side" was replaced with "firing behind the passenger seat through a large hole"

mazda/nissan 10-01-2008 06:13 PM

anyone ever considered mounting shallow subwoofers behind the seats? or is this not optimal?

nice pictars brain, does the 12 handle the double kick pedal of slipknots bass drums well or does it kind of roll through them?

y8s 10-01-2008 09:17 PM

slim subs behind the seats might work for people under 5'6"...

I think the thing I'm going to miss most about swapping from crx to miata is not having those 2 mtx 10s in that wide open back end. :giggle:

I had a CRX too,I was running a 15'' Orion XTR DVC with a Phoenix Gold MS-2125 1000 watt amp.

I could shake windows a block away with that system.

944obscene 10-05-2008 11:46 PM

I ran a Crunch 12" on a Pioneer 500 watt amp. Chose it for the price and decent quality. And with minimal preparation, I got it to sound great, as well as LOUD. My right ear still suffers when noises get too intense.

Clean setup brain. How much weight added total? I'm guessing around.. 15-20lbs?

Here mine, still enough room for the spare and some bags.
PS excuse the mess and the missing driver's side back panel, was adjusting coilovers.

Thats exactly what mine is only I attached some stilts and turned the box upside down so the sub fires into the trunk floor. Sounds 10089238094829x better firing into the more solid trunk floor than the flimsy trunk lid.

bass is omnidirectional... and sheet metal is sheet metal.
