being built to battle me @ the track in 2010

1st off, when sitting in my buddy's civic a while back, i was trying to think of a car that would have the interior roominess of a civic, good visibility, room to carry stuff if you needed to, and rear wheel drive. i was thinking if only this civic with this 9k rev limit engine, great suspension, and lightweight car were rwd, it would be awesome. i love my miata, but i'm big and my car's not, plus you can't carry much, (like wheels to the track) without a trailer or something crazy. my buddy had fun tracking his civic, but he wanted a rwd again, and found out that the guy he sold his '86 corolla gts to wanted a civic. perfect, he travelled to tenn., traded, and came back with what you see in the pics below. his intention was to pull the awesome, but anemic 20v 1.6 and install a f20c, (s2000 swap) with the sole intention of battling with me at the track next year. (nasa tt) well, after he returned with it, i was sitting in it, and it occured to me that this is the rwd civic i had been dreaming of. the roomier miata, with space for your tires and tools, and great visibility, and still lightweight and small. (it weighed 2,171 when he corner balanced it)

unfortunately, the deal he had setup for the f20c motor swap fell through. which turned out to be great luck. he reasearched and found alot of people were swapping a certain motor into everything under the sun with great results. what is it? an all aluminum, quad cam, 32valve v8 from a lexus ls 400!!
turns out it weighs only 66lbs more (motor and tranny) than the s2k motor swap, which because it was all aluminum weighed about the same as his 1.6 iron block 4 cyl.! better yet it makes about 60-70whp more than the s2k, and waayyyyy more torque! it also fits alot better, and there's 6 wires to hook up and the motor will start and run like factory! they have been putting these in everything from 4-runners to supra's, to miata's. they are 80lbs lighter than an ls1 swap and are rated at 290hp from the factory. anyway's it should be awesome, i think i may have to turn my boost up for him. he already had a full custom coilover kit from t3, he's gonna run 225 nt-01's, and he's gonna get a bbk. with custom headers, exhaust, cold air intake, and a standalone ecu, he should be making 270+ whp and be just a bit under 2,300lbs.

that looks like fun!

Sam Amporful 10-23-2009 02:16 AM

Its hard to believe that thing is only 66lbs heavier. It should be a rocket

spoolin2bars 10-23-2009 10:54 AM

yeah, i guess there's a big difference between iron blocks and aluminum. plus that 1uz-fe he's swapping in has has been stripped if any parts not needed or used (like ac/ps/smog and emissions equipment, etc..) otherwise is would be closer to 100lbs. difference which is still very close to the orig. weight.

Excuse me!!!! literally 6 wires??? I haven't seen or heard about a miata with this V8. It sounds extremely interesting though, can we say budget V8 miata swap??

Jeff_Ciesielski 10-23-2009 11:05 AM

The 1uz-fe is an awesome motor. IIRC, one of the fastest FCs in the world is powered by a twin turbo 1uz.

WTF V8 miata under 3k .... O_O I gotz to kill me self

Not buying the 6 wires part but I'd love to see this in person. You should invite him up to H2R.

6 wires:
injectors
idle valve
hall sensor
igniter
ground
starter

I bookmarked that page, cant wait to see how it turns out.

Doppelgänger 10-23-2009 12:19 PM

Yeah, i've seen the Wreck Racing car run a few AutoX events here. Such a strange sight to see and hear. Looks liek a Miata, sounds like a beefy V8, open the hood and find a Toyota engine lol.

I was under the impression that the 1UZ was the iron block, but that was really the 2UZ. The early 1UZ is the way to go (89-94) as expressed by a picture of the connecting rods.

And for more fun, imagine the 1UZ + Miata + turboz =

and for more fun Ultima GTR + 1UZFE (built)+ turboz= 0-211 in 19seconds

When i look at that rod pic, I always want to crank up the boost.

spoolin2bars 10-23-2009 02:30 PM

yeah, iirc, if your gonna keep it stock bottom end and n/a, the 95-97 made more power with higher comp. ratio / higher revs/ etc... it's crazy how cheap these motors and tranny's go for. there was a car featured in grass roots (not the challenge car) that claimed he got the motor for $400. i thought he was full of shit, but.... i guess he wasn't lying.

i was over at his house last night. got the trans. crossmember mocked up. motor position is finalized.

hustler: you are correct......... miatamaniac: you are wrong...lol

yeah, he's been up to hhr since it opened. we (cbr pca) were the first group to rent the track out and have a de/tt trackday. he was just up there instructing during the z-con event, but he was in his 500awhp r32 skyline gtr! you can bet for sure, when this toyota is done, we'll be there.

buffon01 10-23-2009 03:06 PM

Wow this really affected my perspectives toward the LSx swap, and what school I should transfer to next school year.

spoolin2bars 10-23-2009 03:21 PM

not from texas, but i got here fast as i could! lol........ poor attempt at sounding like a texan bumper sticker.

Stein 10-23-2009 03:54 PM

I had leaned this way before I went 5.0. Running LS400's are available for $1K so you get everything that you need to do the swap. The only problem is you are stuck with an automatic unless you want to drop $1200 for a kit to install a Supra box or a lot of fab work. That alone killed it for me. Also, the older 1UZ are more like 230-240 HP, not 290. The newer ones might be 290 but you won't get one as cheap.

There has to be some sort of wiring for an ECU or something, right?

fail

never take my internetting seriously unless its "medium" in length. Too short means its reactionary. Too long means poetic license.

my buddy bought his newer 1uz in a t-boned ls400 for $1000. runs perfect if you saw the video on his thread.
also he bought a 2nd gen supra tranny for $150. fabbed up a tranny mount and engine mounts himself in about an hour. that tranny's tail end is the perfect length for his car. console, everything fit's perfect like oem. there's 11 different tail pieces for that tranny, a w158? i'm sure one could be made to fit a miata pretty good without spending that much.

i'm not sure what you guys are failing to understand on the wiring. but he did the reasearch, and i'll make sure he gets picks of it. the engine harness connects to the ecu. there's only a few things that need to be hooked up separately.

Nagase 10-30-2009 02:39 AM

I like the pictures, but does he have any more specifics as far as the recipe for the car?
