Default Deer hit at Barber today

A local SM racer tagged the hell out of a deer coming up the hill at T3 at Barber... video is best played in slow motion! Honestly, I'm surprised that's all the damage that was.

Holy ****. Looks like he caught it right at the crest of the hill, that’s a fast part of the track. He’s really lucky it didn’t come through the windshield.

Car really took it well. And the deer launch . . . impressive. Wonder how much higher it would have gone with no braking.

I've got a deer dent on the driver's front fender of the track car. I leave it in to superstitiously prevent a repeat occurrence.

I would have thought the flagger at the top of the hill could have radioed back a corner if he saw it. May not have been time. Deer are stupid and appear quickly.

Am I bad person for laughing hysterically at this video and watching it over and over?

One friend of mine working another corner described the radio chatter as:
"We have a deer"
"Where, is it on the"
"Oh he hit it!"
The guys in the announcer booth said they saw it on CCTV (there are cameras everywhere at Barber) right before it ran out. Wish we had that video! Unfortunately the front facing camera crapped out about the time I left grid...

I’ve watched this at least 20 times now. So much better with the sound up, there are literally tears streaming down my face. You said (presumably into a radio) the only sensible thing to say in such a scenario: “I just hit a ****** deer!” Exactly the words that left my mouth when I hit one at sixteen years old, as if I didn’t believe it to be true. My guess is you were going around 90-100mph when you hit it?

Seriously, good on you for not losing the car in a spin at that crest. I’m glad nobody was hurt (except the deer I guess).

I'm glad it didn't join you in the cabin. That's when hitting a deer gets painful and messy.

I cut that out of the version I put on the Facebooks.... Here's the shorter PG version: https://youtu.be/T6r2j7kA0BY

Looking at GPS data from qualifying I was probably going around 80 mph. Little 1.6 doesn't like to pull up that hill....

It was a pretty rough weekend even before that. The wife and I just had twins so I haven't been on track since March. The only car prep I did was changing front pads and bleeding brakes. The car was slow all weekend. I was two seconds off the pace I had last year when I ran just the TT portion of this event. At the time of the incident I was fighting for 19th of 23 cars. At least that made the weekend a little more exciting....

Well, you won the video contest. That's what people remember. Plastic trophies are clutter.

Probably closer to 70-75. 3/4 shift is right as you're about to crest the hill. EDIT: Or I'm just slow on RS4's b/c he's shifting at the curbing, so maybe closer to 90? Either way, that deer got tossed. Holy ****.

I just checked my data logs, I’m around 75mph at that crest and probably slower than the OP.
