hello from my kindle fire!

Technically my girlfriends I suppose. Anyone else use one of these? Beyond the 3g and camera, I don't see why you'd get an ipad over one of these. That being said I'm a much faster Mt.net browser on my iphone 4.

Woof for saving $400!

jtpaintballwdp 02-17-2012 04:59 PM

I have used both (own an iPad, it was a gift) and the Fire. If I were to buy one, I'd buy the Kindle

I saved $470 on mine. Hooray for BF price match. The Amazon version of Android sucks though, mines rooted and running CM7. Makes for a decent ereader, PDF viewer and overall google provider while working on the car.

That's pretty much what she wanted it for, couch browsing. Hence our absent desire to spend $600 on an ipad. As nice as they are, she has a 4s and doesn't have a school/business need for it, enter the Fire.

Like I said I'm a faster browser and typist on my iphone, but I've had an iphone for 4 years, and a Fire for 2 days. Given time I'm sure I'll speed up. The one thing that's a little annoying is my iphone scrolls to the left when I finish a line, much like an old type writer. On the Fire I have to manually scroll left if I want to see what I'm typing.

I have a nokia E63.

Doesnt need to scroll left..

Well done!! I'm shopping for a sub-$300 tablet myself and am stuck on the Fire or Nook Tablet. The Nook Tablet appears to have a pretty legit version of Android except it won't connect to Ad-Hoc devices so I can't tether off my GalaxyS2e4Gtouch.. Appears they're still working on unlocking the boot loader on it, though.

Spent like $200 out the door on my Kindle Fire. Does everything I need and actually more than I expected.

Both currently have full roms(CyanogenMod), but the kindle seems to have the most development to it. The only thing I can see the Nook having over the Kindle is bluetooth.

I personaly own a kindle and currently run CM7 with a overclocked kernel and use it every day at work.

Had no plans on "jailbreaking" anything we got, so ease of said procedure was never a consideration. Between my laptop, desktop, iphone, xbox, Fire, Miata, motorcycle, etc., I have no time to fiddle with much more beyond the vehicles. My friend at work is constantly playing with his phone, trying to show me new features, half the time they don't work the first time, and he comes back the next day to show me something my iphone can already do, or a feature I'd never use.

I went with the Kindle because of Amazon's stability. Isn't the nook Barnes and Noble? They're going out of business. d/t Kindle and the iPad ironically. They tried to come out with the Nook to compete with both and save their paper book store, but it was too late. I know the local one closed down.

:jerkit: I digress.

Uhm, I believe you've got that reversed.. Borders filed for bankruptcy in 2011, B&N is doing just fine. There is consideration that they might break off the Nook division from B&N's main company because it hasn't been very profitable which actually shocks me.

Thing is I'm a tech person and refuse to leave "well enough alone." Love to hack my devices to get the most out of my hardware that I paid good money for, which is why I refuse to buy something that is locked down with no ability to customize or use the full potential of. Have recently form a group of five developers and we're planning on writing several new pieces of software for Android, along with a couple Flash based games. Should be fun.

Found some guy on Craigslist a couple weeks ago selling a Nook Tablet "One week old in perfect order" for $150.00 but I'm still convinced its a scam. He left a # in the ad stating, "Call or text anytime" so I emailed asking him to verify it was a TABLET and not the Color, which he did verify and to contact him if I'm interested at the number. Immediately following I dispatched a text message asking when I could meet him to purchase the tablet but did not receive a reply, ever. Sent another email after three days asking if the unit was actually for sale or just a scam, he replied to my email after another three days asking why I thought it was a scam and to state it was really for sale. Again, immediately replied to his email very clearly informing him that I wished to purchase his tablet but again have yet to hear back. Maybe I will get the damn Fire..

I bought my mom a nook color and when I was visiting last I put CM7 on a sd card for it and it made the thing 1000% better. It is the fastest "tablet" out there? Nah, but it does most things just fine, not to mention the CM7 rom is light years faster than the stock one.

I received a MSI 110W windows based tablet as a gift. The specs indicate it should perform awesome but apparently the SSD is a POS. I still use it plenty but between the drive performance and the clunky Win7 tablet controls, it gets frustrating. I'm holding out for Windows 8 and I'll get a better SSD for it then. I also am thinking about building a car mount for it, you know, for baller gauges and whatnot.

Another option for those looking is the blackberry playbook. I got one for 200 rather than the fire. Plays 1080, and has front and rear cameras.

Planned to use it to stream media to the tv through the micro hdmi, but is now just a couch browser. Using a Roku to stream media, and cut cable down to free basic. Roku is sweet, and the wife loves it.

----.

Just realized that both the Nook and the Fire are missing Bluetooth. That sucks. :(

DXO 02-20-2012 12:33 AM

If I remember correctly the both the Nook and Fire have a combo wifi/Bluetooth chipset. The Nooks has been unlocked but the Fire has not. The Fire is believed to have a modified chip for the wifi/Bluetooth but seems unlikely, since it would add to manufacturing cost. They will have very short range though since they do not have antennas for the BT radios.
