HP Slate >>> iPad

It's amazing how many people jump on the Apple bandwagon for any new gadget they release like it's the best damn thing ever created.

Fuck yeah, blue block!!!@ APPLE YEAH!

You know that HP canned the slate officially this week, right? Battery life was apparently one of the major issues. With the Palm acquisition, apparently they are going to take another crack at it based on WebOS.

The iPad is great, if you need it for what it is. If you need/want what we all traditionally think of as a tablet, the iPad will definitely disappoint on function. I for one, actually like it a lot. Great couch surfer.

I'm glad HP decided to rethink the slate, the one they were going to release with the windows7 OS would've been terrible. Have you tried using a desktop based OS on a small touchscreen device? The majority of applications aren't touch friendly.

I used to have an Toshiba convertible laptop, great laptop but windows XP was a terrible interface even if it was the 'tablet' edition.

Now I have the iPad, I'm typing this response on it now in bed. For a secondary computer it's great. Runs miataturbo just fine ;)

A netbook will do more and cost less. IF the iPad had a real operating system, I would have been first in line to buy it... but its just a big iPod touch. what a let down.

the ipad isn't for people who want an operating system. it's a casual computing device. it's for social networking and browsing the web and playing games and stuff like that.

if you're going to be testing heisenberg's uncertainty principle and need a computer to do it on, you'll probably want a desktop with some obscure nerdwarez on it. not an ipad.

the ipad is the automatic transmission. it is the starbucks. it is the 90th percentile's bread and butter. it should not be surprising that guys who build turbo miatas wouldn't want one. it's more for people driving their bone stock power hardtop NC.

that said, I'd probably rock an android tablet if there was one for 200 bucks.

kotomile 05-01-2010 11:00 AM

Apple would do well to give up their jihad on Macromedia and accept that people want to be able to watch Flash.

neogenesis2004 05-01-2010 11:05 AM

If I had the expendable cash I'd buy an Ipad. Most of the time I spend on the pc is in my living room on my htpc watching shit on icefilms. I could watch my MacGuyver on the 42" and surf the interwebz on my ipad. Would actually be fucking perfect.

Braineack 05-01-2010 11:10 AM

I already have an ipod, so I dont want the ipad.

jayc72 05-01-2010 11:44 AM

I've played with one. They are too bulky and heavy to be truly portable. I think this is going to be massive fail for Apple. Apple has been successful in coming out with devices that people didn't know they wanted, and this has been a big part of why they've had a lot of wins. I think the iPad is a device people think they want, until they have it. The realization will come that you just paid $500+ for a bulky iPod.

And why in the name of Zeus's Butthole did they not offer hand-writting recognition? I think that would have been a feature which would have made it have a broader appeal.

Apple has really been on a war against Adobe, which doesn't make sense to me at all. The market that supported Apple when they were really down in the 90's was the professional graphic sectors, and they were all using Adobe products. Most graphic firms still use Apple with the Adobe suite, so this is a real bread & butter market for them. Their first move that angered Adobe was to release Lightroom, and to now put a hate on Flash is just moronic.

It seems Apple's consumer success with iPod, iPhone, etc, has really caused them to lose focus on an important part of their clientele.

neogenesis2004 05-01-2010 12:30 PM

If you look at their revenues you will see that most of their business is in the Ipod/Iphone. Why would they not focus on that instead of desktops, which make up an almost insignificant part of their revenue in comparison.

Products change, people change, demands change. They are smart with what they are doing because it is keeping them relevant.

The only problem here is when I want to watch flash videos (like those embedded on news sites) on my iPhone and can't. Everything else here is a PC and uses Chrome as the browser.

I work at Best Buy in the computer section and am usually at the apple table. A lot of people miss the point with the Ipad and I get to explain it daily. The biggest gripe we get is no USB ports. When you start adding things like that you completely defeat the purpose of the Ipad, as others have said. I flat out tell people that if you need usb ports, a keyboard, etc that you need to just get yourself a laptop. LOTS of folks are trying to use it as a laptop replacement and that is just not what it's for. If you get one with that in mind you are going to severely disappointed.

It's a cool gadget that actually can do quite a lot but it can't compete with a laptop. It's not meant to. Will I buy one? no. I can not use something that only allows me to do one thing at a time. I've actually talked to a few people that I convinced not to buy an Ipad and just stick with the laptop they have.

HTML5 is coming and soon Flash will be no more. I think it's supposed to happen in a bit over 6 months.
