Just picked up an old 280z

Parents surprised me with this the other day, after I had inquired about it for months... it's a 78' 280z (2.8 inline 6) supposed to generate 170hp at 5600 rpm, rust is minimal however the classic floor pan rust is evident on the passenger side. It's pretty fun to drive soo far. I need to get it tagged before I really drive it though.. The car has the ZG style nose on it which I like, the guy bought the nose hood and hatch at the same time 3 months ago for 1500 bux and then got them installed.. he let it sit for a month then I bought it from him for 750$ and I drove it home, the car is in really good shape it has on it already a 450 holley long tube headers that are true duals, the car just needs some lovin'.... and a new pass. floor pan. Anyways here it is, color is loud lol but it looks great to me!!!

Bryce 04-24-2011 11:52 PM

That nose screams 911 slant nose to me. I like.

hustler 04-24-2011 11:57 PM

I want to get something old like that, with 4-doors, add a Miata engine and MegaSquirt, then make it my daily.

18psi 04-24-2011 11:58 PM

Very nice. Though I hate the paint job. Some sort of pearl dark gray or black would look titties

dstn2bdoa 04-24-2011 11:59 PM

$750 is a steal. Great find!

jacob300zx 04-24-2011 11:59 PM

That zg nose is the shit, its woth a mint.

I'd really like to make it lack of a better word JDM..... picture below screams what I'd wanna do. apparently it's MS compatible by all means most vehicles are but mine is carbed..... paint is loud like I stated however I like it kinda.... I'm still reading up on alot of things for this car I could update this as i go down the list of mods if anyone cares lol

messiahx 04-25-2011 01:24 AM

That is awesome. Always loved the looks of those cars. Needs fender flares and deep dishes.

matthewdesigns 04-25-2011 04:38 PM

What a score...jeebus. I'd even rock that paint! I've never heard of a ZG nose, was that something that was an early aftermarket part for Z cars? Or was it originally a Japanese home market option?

Poked around a bit, didn't find those answers but found this...sick!

Edit: Found this and thought I'd post it for anyone else who might be wondering...

The Japan-only HS30-H Nissan Fairlady ZG was released in Japan in October 1971 to homologate the 240Z for Group 4 racing. Differences between the Fairlady ZG and an export market Datsun 240Z include an extended fiberglass ‘aero-dyna’ nose, wider over-fenders riveted to the body, a rear spoiler, acrylic glass headlight covers and fender mounted rear view mirrors. The Fairlady ZG was available in three colours: Grande Prix Red, Grande Prix White and Grande Prix Maroon. The "G" in Fairlady ZG stands for "Grande." Although the ZG was not sold in the USA and was never sold outside Japan, in order for it to be eligible for competition in the U.S., Nissan sold the nose kit as a dealer's option which is known as the "G-nose". With the nose added, these 240Zs are often referred to as 240ZGs, outside of Japan.

Reverant 04-25-2011 04:42 PM

Needs EFI and distributorless ignition to free up some power.

kaisersoze 04-25-2011 11:36 PM

Hmm I thought the L28 was fuel injected? Anyway
Now you just add SR20, RB25(for Nissan purists) or the default for big power LSx.

brgracer 04-26-2011 12:33 AM

Sweet score! Always had a soft spot for older z-cars.

Fireindc 04-26-2011 05:29 AM

Just swap in the L28t(I think) from the 280zx turbo, I saw a swapped 240z at a local dyno day do 270 whp on the stock turbo. The guy had very little into the whole setup and it was really sweet.

I'd go "cheap" with a 5.3 or 6.0 truck Vortec 3rd gen LS motor. Iron block but takes well to boost.

I always check out craigslist for a 240, 260, or 280 shell to do this.

GeneSplicer 04-26-2011 08:13 AM

My buddy has one with a turboed SB350 - insanely insane. 671rwhp.... and looks incredible too. Maybe I can dig a pic up for ya. Looks like another money pit to me!! Have fun... :bigtu:

icantthink4155 04-26-2011 09:41 AM

I love the paint job.

NA6C-Guy 04-26-2011 09:56 AM

I say do it that green all over. Fitting for a Z car. I envy you sir. I tried to get a Z car for a while before I got my Miata, but the few I actually found were in poor shape. I turned down a pretty nice 280 just up the road from me, but only because I couldn't talk him down $500. I kind of regret not throwing out the extra cash and getting it.

rider384 05-02-2011 09:42 PM

Needs moar RB26

p51hellfire 05-02-2011 09:53 PM

Hha there is an rb25 sitting about 10 miles from my house in a buddies shop needs rebuild but still has engine tranny ecu wiring everything plus the install kit is about a grand ( drive shaft, engine+ trans mount, other odds an en I could be like 3k in and have one b.a. Z, however I'd like to keep it kinda stock no giant power adders

miatauser123 05-04-2011 11:32 AM

I just picked up a 78 280. I threw a 350 small block in it. We should keep in touch.

brgracer 05-04-2011 01:32 PM

Some inspiration...haha...(not mine....I wish....)

Just don't push the revs too much on that motor if it is stock. I've helped change a crank due to spun bearings in one before. They don't always oil themselves well enough in the higher revs when stock.

Faeflora 05-04-2011 08:05 PM

One of the finest looking japanian cars ever made.

dustinb 05-04-2011 09:01 PM

Sweet find! I want to do a Datsun 510 / turbo miata engine.

gospeed81 05-04-2011 10:54 PM

Definitely a good deal...and I'm jealous. I've had three of them throughout the years and keep telling myself there's no reason to get another as long as I'm playing with a Miata...but I"m still drawn to them.

Last one I had came with a built 3.1L that screamed...at least when I wasn't fixing the injector harness. I had looked into MSing it, but the MS was still in it's infancy at the time and I wasn't that brave yet. I'm sure the Z guys have come pretty far by now and it's probably worth checking out.

Konis work great on those if you can still find them.

xj220sc 05-19-2011 02:52 AM

Would people make fun of me if I painted my Miata that color?
ITS JUST SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO PRETTY

p51hellfire 05-19-2011 03:04 AM

xj220sc 05-19-2011 06:04 AM

Well guys after two years if hard work this is where I'm at with the z decided to go a different route with the looks and focused a little more on performance... Haha put a 5.7 ls1 in there from a 99 vette, threw a big ole 595/596, 232/234 cam and a few other bolt ons, 3" exhaust 6spd manual, some chassis work and some body mods but other than that a fun 400hp beast!!!!

triple88a 08-28-2013 05:16 AM

Fucking beautiful. That is my dream as well. Btw whats the weight on that thing?

miata2fast 08-28-2013 10:03 AM

Wow! You have come a long way from the Miata.

sixshooter 08-28-2013 11:19 AM

And you just missed getting more stitches in your foot by a couple of weeks.

Fireindc 08-28-2013 11:22 AM

The color still does nothing for me at all. But wow nice motor and overall build.

Any videos of this beast in action?

triple88a 08-28-2013 06:04 PM

How hard was finding parts along the running gear or is everything out of something else more modern?

p51hellfire 08-28-2013 06:51 PM

Well the weight is 2602lbs wet, the running gear is out of a 99 camaro, the rear end is stock it's a little shy of an 8" so it holds the power fine, I do need a lsd however. The install kit is from a company called johns cars inc, which provided everything from mounts to driveshaft. It's a great car I love it soo much, handles like a dream and has lots of power with plenty of room to grow

p51hellfire 08-28-2013 06:53 PM

Ahh I miss ole butts county!!! Haha

triple88a 08-28-2013 07:15 PM

Thats fucking nuts. That thing weights as much as a v8 miata.

Am I reading this right? Is that a $700 conversion kit? Seems more reasonable than the $2000 kits we have for our cars.

I also want a V8 version of this now please.

williams805 10-12-2013 07:50 PM

Well played!
I had a '77 for a while. I did a little late night drifting into a curb. I was in high school and couldn't afford/didn't know how to fix it, so I sold it cheap. Damn!

I always thought this car was the perfect V8 swap candidate.

Enjoy that bad ass beast.

Ningai 10-17-2013 03:05 AM

Had a Z car with a V8 a few years back. Awesomely fun cars.
