Kelford 272 idle in my 91

JayL 04-19-2010 04:25 PM

That sounds awesome.

Cspence 04-19-2010 04:41 PM

You bastard! That sounds awsome...

I take it you won't be selling them

johnmatt 04-19-2010 05:28 PM

Sounds awesome. I thought you got the 280s? Change your mind?

WonTon 04-19-2010 05:31 PM

FastColt 04-19-2010 06:24 PM

Yeah 280s were highly recommended for drag race only, no street drivabilty.

miata2fast 04-19-2010 06:27 PM

What is the duration at .050 inches lift?

Mach929 04-19-2010 06:45 PM

how many rpms was that? got any driving vids?

TurboTim 04-19-2010 06:51 PM

Oh hell f*cking yeah.

yunvmyegt 04-19-2010 08:01 PM

i love the lumpy idle sound of them cams.....

240_to_miata 04-19-2010 08:03 PM

DO NOT SELL! what are you up to this weekend? must see in person.

FastColt 04-19-2010 08:38 PM

Cspence came over and we got it running even smoother at idle. Haven't driven it yet. Still waiting on the injector situation. These low imp 1000cc are going to be a pain in the ass.

WonTon 04-19-2010 08:43 PM

they dont make cams for the 1.8 do they?

therieldeal 04-19-2010 08:43 PM

sweet mother of gawd

i need my escort to sound like this. time to upgrade my cams again i guess...

shlammed 04-19-2010 08:44 PM

@ wonton

they do. they just dont list them under mazda.

If you go play on their website its under the head porting part.

WonTon 04-19-2010 08:53 PM

link? so i know im at the right place

levnubhin 04-19-2010 08:58 PM

Its all metric since they are made in NZ. @ 1.00mm valve lift they are both 230 duration.

Only head work i have is super tech springs and ti retainers.

WonTon check out www.kelford.co.nz You wont be able to order from them direct, I had to go through Motion Lab Tuning in NC, and they had to go through Motovicity in CA, who is Kelfords US distributor. Motovicity sucks dick to deal with, they fucked up my order and made getting these things a 2 and a half month nightmare. Todd at Motion Lab is a hell of a guy and did pretty much all he could to get this transaction to go smoothly.

If anyone does want cams from Kelford, prepair to shell out all money up front, and be ready to wait a loooooooooong ass time.

FastColt 04-21-2010 01:26 PM

Did some more light tuning last night, if we can't get this thing to idle smooth I'm getting rid of these cams. I want my car to drive like its stock when I'm not in boost.

therieldeal 04-21-2010 02:15 PM

Here we all are creaming our pants over the one thing you hate about the cams... ironic? lol

miata2fast 04-21-2010 04:45 PM

I would not get rid of them just yet. It will take some time getting it right.

Have you considered lowering the gear ratio just a bit. Gear change and cam change go hand in hand. It will get you out of the hard to drive lower rpm, and into a smoother higher rpm while cruising.

If you dont want them, I do! Your car sounds SO much better than mine...especially in person.

DIBS.

That being said though, with a little time I bet we get it running smooth . Christ, in the 45 minutes we spent with it I think it improved ten fold.

Bryce 04-21-2010 05:45 PM

Wow that's nice!

johnmatt 04-21-2010 05:58 PM

Now I wanna get cams before IM now

Sparetire 04-21-2010 06:56 PM

Sweeet!

When you start making big changes in cam profile idle is usualy going to be lumpy. Personally I like it. I also loved going to a no-balance shaft 4G63 with poly mounts and manual steering. So its personal preference.

I say keep them. That sounds awesome, and I want to hear some WOT in 3rd from 2K to redline!

johnmatt 04-21-2010 06:58 PM

+1 on some vids

He's just waiting on some injectors....then I'm sure videos will follow ;)

stranges12712 04-21-2010 07:36 PM

Sounds nice man, almost like mine :)

18psi 04-21-2010 07:45 PM

stop teasing us and get some WOT videos already:D

FastColt 04-21-2010 08:05 PM

they would suck dick with the 230cc injectors i have in there now lol. Im waiting on my 750s.......

Turbo_4 04-21-2010 09:02 PM

Sounds sick!

viperormiata 04-21-2010 09:52 PM

:drool:Wow, I am so in-love with that sound:drool:

Please don't fight with them so much that you end getting rid of them. You will be able to drive it normally, it will just take some massaging and from what Cspence has written, it seems you two have already made some headway.

When we had a Hennessy 650 cam installed in our '95 it took fooooorever to get used to the way it needed to be driven. Was it worth the effort? Hellz Yeah!

May I ask how much you paid for the set?

Also, any idea who else makes performance cams for the 1.6?

EDIT: Whoa. Just checked out the prices....very interesting. But, not bad for a set of Cams.

stranges12712 04-21-2010 10:37 PM

HKS. But they are very pricy ;)

Lol, I thought those would be automatically excluded.

Full_Tilt_Boogie 04-21-2010 11:28 PM

I just got wood

FRT_Fun 04-22-2010 12:56 AM

I am jealous... I'd like to get that exact same cam setup. Someday. Maybe someone can get a group buy going since it seems like such a pain to buy just one.

Why?

Because they are, as you said, very pricey. I doubt most people here will pony up the cash for a set. Especially since not much information is available about how they actually perform.

FastColt: Sorry to threadjack. Good luck with smoothing out those cams.

leatherface24 04-22-2010 10:01 AM

sounds like my old FD. i loved it but man my neigbors hated me. hell they still hate me now
