there is alot of bling bling under that hood of urs

hustler 12-09-2008 12:07 PM

nice, looks a lot like my car.

What is your ride height at the fender?
Do you scrape the scooper frequently?
Does the scooper get full exposure to air?

I want to keep my r-pack lip, but I'm worried that I'll rip off the scooper if I go off track.

Saml01 12-09-2008 01:47 PM

Too clean.

Mr. Wob 12-09-2008 01:59 PM

Thanks guys.

Ride height is 12.5 front and 12.75 rear.

I live in NYC so I scrap more than I would like, but if you are careful its not often. I used to scrap more with my FMsprings/Illumina setup but now with my 949 Tein Flex its stiff enough to avoid scraps.

The scooper gets fresh air. Its designed for the R lip. But like everything BEGI- nothing fits, so expect to fiddle with it a little bit. The new design bolts it to the rad supports instead of the lip. I dont really like that idea either so I am working on some extensions that mount to the frame with break away bolts.

I have a Koyo 55mm rad, the FCM/2/3rd's Cobra fan shroud, air scooper and 180 thermostat - I stay very very cool. In the summer I never budged off a normal range. In the winter I am actually cooler than stock.

Here is the interior:

that looks so hot..I am drooling right now....I'm not even crazy about na's, but that one....mmmmmm

hustler 12-09-2008 02:10 PM

wow, our cars are really similar. I may switch to flex, or something similar. I'm probably going to give BEGi the scooper back and ask them to make one to hang under the lip which doesn't mount to the radiator.

Thanks for the info.

As for the water temps, ever had the car on the track? I also have an FM hood to help out.

Mr. Wob 12-09-2008 02:17 PM

Post up your car - I could care less about a thread hijack lol.

I havent had the car to the track since I finished the build but based off some "closed circuit" drives, I think I should be more than fine.

just a 1991 w/ a 1.9l 99 motor, begi s3, bilstein/GC (corner weighted), sparco sprints, 6ul's...I guess a lot of cars on here are similar now that I think about it.

/hijack

1991 pearl BRG (think db9-r) BEGi S3, MSpnp, '99 swap, 1865cc 8.6:1/BP&balanced, "cleaned-up" head, 5-speed, 3.90 r&p w/torsen, coolant reroute, Spec S3 clutch, huge radiator, 3" enthuza, Sparco Sprints, Bilstein/GC (450/375), RB sways, sport brakes, lol

Saml01 12-09-2008 02:45 PM

Where in NYC are you?

How is that clutch holding? I havent heard much positive about them, but they sure are cheaper than the Xtreme.

Manhattan: Hells Kitchen - right next to Columbus Circle.

BK? What neighborhood? Who have you been using for your dyno tuning on your MS?

I just wanted the one that would hold with a light pressure plate. I only have the car at 10psi now, and I'm not driving it hard. I side stepped the clutch a bit at 4k rpm, and it slipped and i made the sad face. After putting a few miles and some torque on it, I don't think the clutch was ever really broken in on 94whp.

It chatters a little, but the pedal is light. If it holds 230lb/ft, I'll buy another one.

Check with me before you buy because I want to see what happens after some action at the track. Its a metal clutch, so it should only get better with a little heat.

Mr. Wob 12-09-2008 04:16 PM

I have an ACT Xtreme and ACT ProLite flywheel and I love them - zero complaints, no chatter and no slip. Pedal is only a little harder and the flywheel is very very forgiving. Not looking to buy, but I was hoping to hear a more positive review eventually on the Spec clutches so we could have a cheaper alternative to the Xtreme.

curly 12-09-2008 07:08 PM

love your car, interior could use an aftermarket steering wheel, I love my momo champion.

slutz4 12-09-2008 07:33 PM

nice car, very well put together

Mr. Wob 12-09-2008 07:43 PM

Im happy with an airbag, thanks :)

Thanks guys.

johndoe 12-09-2008 08:32 PM

Wheels look great. Glad to see another Begi powered 6ul shod NA in the metro area.

Mr. Wob 12-09-2008 09:57 PM

Wow - we have pretty similar cars too lol.

Mine is an S4 and I am running a FM bar in the front and stock rear bar and no COPS but pretty close otherwise lol.

Was that 250rwhp you ran at 14.5psi? or corrected hp? Gotta be rwhp, right? Any boost creep? Guessing by the half lb psi you are running external gate?

Were did you get tuned at around here?

johnwag 12-09-2008 11:50 PM

Damn Mr. Wob! You're a rebel! Parking in a No Parking zone in front of the showroom entrance at the Ferrari dealership. ;)

When I think turbo track miata, I think black or white NA with 6ul's and a turbo kit. Very nice!

Your car looks like mine will, but my car is black.......which means it's dirty.

Toddcod 12-10-2008 12:40 AM

Nice ride, very clean.

Bensonhurst.

I am street tuning, but I know a shop in Linden that has great options for dyno time. Can let you know if you are interested.

Mr. Wob 12-10-2008 10:20 AM

Thanks again guys.

John: Hang the rebel flag! Its actually the underground lift in front of Ferrari's North American headquarters. And its the only level park of their entire property aside from a garage area in the back lol.

Sam: Thanks. I am definitely looking for some dyno time soon once I get my cold weather crank settings down and dial in some slightly more aggressive alignment settings. If you are ever down for a ride let me know - weekends are for racing, cruising and riding.

ArtieParty 12-10-2008 10:33 AM

Nice car.

You might be interested in joining Welcome to Mobbius too. Once the weather turns around, we do lots of spirited driving in the north jersey area.

Mr. Wob 12-10-2008 10:38 AM

Thanks Artie.

I met a couple guys from the Mob when i was doing some initial suspension tuning at A/X. Took forever to get things honed in and then I went and changed it all. I believe one guy's name was Eric? Had a aggressively a/x oriented Miata. Gutted with a cage and a turbo from a MS if I recall correctly. I think another guy was Roman. Seemed like some good guys.

I drive every chance I get, cold or not, top is down and I'm driving - I'll be out agin on Saturday for a little I'm sure and Sunday I'll be out in another car and I need to do a trans pan gasket, but I'm still down for a cruise.

Internally gated. 250rwhp at the dynojet place that's used by this forum for the dyno days. I want with a bunch of guys from the Mob forum. I say ~14.5 because boost was not totally steady that day as it was much warmer then ususal and I had to retune the duty cycle table pretty quickly. It fluctuated between 14-14.5psi. Road tuned by me.

cueball1 12-10-2008 12:40 PM

Wob,

I'm another one very similar to yours. 94' black & tan, BEGI S4, 2860rs, mspnp, ACT HD, 8" 6UL's, enthuza 2.5", metal cat, Tein RA's 9/6kg, RB hollow w/ stock rear bar, Savington's COP's, stocker seats with race seat & 5 pt. harness swapped in for track days.

Was dumb and cheap and went internal wg. Saved $150 bucks vs external. Should have paid the money and gone external but it was a test mule for Corky. He was experimenting with the internal wg porting at that time and I let him go that way. Mine doesn't boost creep as bad as others though. Johndoe's was so bad he swapped for a smaller turbo. Mine put down 241 rwhp at 10.5 psi. I've tweaked it a bunch since but haven't been back to a dyno.

Savington in the group buy section does a great job at a great price on COP's!

Damn fun cars aren't they! Your's looks serious and very nice. Well done!

Mr. Wob 12-10-2008 01:57 PM

Thank cueball - I went internal because I think they are more than capable of handling the boost I want to run and the added space savings. Mine was ported and I get about 1psi of creep sometimes, nothing too major. If it gets bad when if turn up the boost more I will just change the setup.

This is seriously excessive amount of Miata's for me - something along the lines of 15 including parts cars and Miatas bought to flip. I have been driving them for about 10-11 years now and no matter how much money I make (or will ever) I still will always have one. Incredible way to put a smile my face.

cueball1 12-10-2008 03:59 PM

Good to hear the porting worked well for you. Mine's about the same.

There's something about a 250 hp Miata that seems so wrong and so right at the same time. If your S4 car is anything like mine the power is so linear it feels more like a big motor than a turbo. Every time I see a guy driving an NA/NB I feel like preaching the glories of turbo. Too many guys think the power will ruin the balance, handling and character they love about the car.

Power doesn't ruin the character it just gives it MORE!

Love embarassing some very expensive cars on the road course with my little chick car. Can't hang with the really big boys though. That'll take a built lower end and another 7-8psi. DD car so it's also pig heavy.

Yeah, with power these cars are just fucking absurd.

As for sitting at the adults table...do you have r-compounds, do you have race compound pads...and are you driving like a man? A 270whp, 2500lb full-interior miata goes back and forth with gt3's and a Z06 for the street-car lap record at MSR.

Will do.

When youre ready, let me know, and we can hit the dyno in Linden.

Mr. Wob 12-10-2008 08:13 PM

Whats the place in Linden by the way? They have any experience with the MS PnP?

BoostTed 12-10-2008 11:18 PM

Good looking car, I always wanted a white miata, but I always end up with red ones.

johndoe 12-13-2008 06:24 PM

Looking at your pics again how the hell are you driving that in the winter with the big rad and the splice to the top hose? Are you seeing the same temp problems that I and others have experienced?

Mr. Wob 12-13-2008 06:39 PM

I cool but not cold. What problems are other having?

johndoe 12-13-2008 07:00 PM

https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/t28985/

Mr. Wob 12-13-2008 07:18 PM

I'm on the cusp. I run cool - not cold enough to bother me, but noticeably cooler than stock in the winter. I have had some aggressive runs in the late summer and I stayed in a good range, but no track time to find out a true spectrum. For now I will leave it.

cueball1 12-13-2008 08:05 PM

At 40 degrees, mine takes 10-15 minutes on the freeway before it really warms up. That's with the BEGI reroute and a big aluminum rad. My commute is about 15 to 20 minutes so I'm just starting to get warm when I get to work.

I'm wondering if I should block off part of the rad for winter.

johndoe 12-13-2008 08:53 PM

I'll repeat myself. With my stock rad and the upper splice it would only get up to temp if I sat and let it heat soak. Once I started moving at 30mph or more the temp would drop like a stone and not rise above 140f when it was 40F ambient no matter how long I stayed in boost. With true winter weather now I don't even want to think about how low the temps would get. Maybe my shrouding is just super efficient though. With the splice in the bottom hose it warms up quick and stays where it should. I'll see how it is in the warmer weather like this. My goal is to not have to upgrade the rad.
