Couple clips from last weekends trip to Virginia International Raceway.

Having fun with a few things from HPDE2. Always fun when you have some friends on track with you.

Everyone was pretty cool in my group this weekend .... other than one guy with a white E46 race car (mr knowitall in the classroom), which I got the pleasure of having him point me by on the last turn of the last lap, last session of the weekend.

BTW Yes im very aware the car is slow ... ive just purchased a 96 M Edition thats gutted and getting a cage, a blower and a ms over the winter for my first time out in DE3 the begining of next year.

Do you, and us a favor DO NOT get a blower. First thought on the Mustang video was, Damn why is the Stang hanging I came back to check your thread and I was oooooh is stock, that's why. :giggle:

Good video.

LOL @ NSX leading a goddam conga line in HPDE2.

Broke Neck 10-18-2010 07:45 PM

That was actually our classroom instructor trying to see how we were all behaving on track. Had a 911 the first session that made a 35 car line behind him and refused to give point bys.

jacob300zx 10-18-2010 08:19 PM

Drop the blower and squirt and pick up some xida's, sway bars, twin disk, poly bushings, etc at 949racing. Keep the cage and associated saftey gear like seat/belts/fire ext. Spend the rest on tires and track time.

Edit: I love that track. Watched the Koni Challenge and Redline there in 08.

Edit 2: I wouldn't have givin you a point by either if I was in traffic. I only point by once I have no chance of passing the next car in front of me in the next 1/4 lap.

Sweet kill vidz, brah.

Broke Neck 10-18-2010 11:20 PM

So why so against a blower? (yes I understand what site im on) Got a buddy setting track records at Summit and VIR winning tires each weekend on a similar setup in TTE, got the PTE guys shaking in their boots and real mad, mad enough for a 30 page long thread on NASAForums.

jacob300zx 10-19-2010 12:07 AM

You seem like a decent driver. Decent enough that you will learn the skill of racecraft way faster if you actually have to work for it out there. Yes by slapping on a blower you will drop lap times. Learning momentum driving will pay big later on down the road. Trust me, run a slick suspension, tire, brake setup next season and throw FI on later. Pick up a traqmate and study lines too. It will make you a better driver...K.I.S.S Don't be f'in around with an FI track car until you get bored with what I listed above.

Broke Neck 10-19-2010 12:20 AM

Ive been on slicks, and this suspension, brake setup all this year ... 8 events this year + 2 LeMons races (in a miata) .

Please do not take that as I know everything there is to know, not at all ... there are still things I need to work on, (left foot braking is a bit iffy for me still) this event I compressed my braking zones down (1.8 Brakes with Hawk pads) ALOT. Thats where I was catching ALOT of the things I was running with real good.

I think I would be able to run with a couple of the more hp cars if I had another 50hp.

Ive been signed off for group 3 but and could run the "Advance" group for Track Daze comming up .... but would rather stay "Intermediate" to have a guy in the passenger seat that has more track exp. that can further help me out.

But when it takes me an hour and a half to come down the back straight .... its a bit rediculous. Im catching cars in the corners and braking zone, but just dont have the hp to run down the straights with anyone.

Again im very open to opinions and suggestions because I dont have my race liscens yet, but is something I am aiming for.

I forgot to ad sway bars and bushings for the winter project as well in the first post.

02semiata 10-19-2010 10:38 AM

How long have you been doing HPDE

shuiend 10-19-2010 10:50 AM

Did you see Joey and Carrie? They were in the White 94 with the polished hood.

jacob300zx 10-19-2010 11:41 AM

List your cars setup, pads, tires, wheel width/weight, suspension/rates, sway sizes, aero, alignment, etc. Here is my guess your on heat cycled out hoosiers, on standard soft GC rates, hawk hps pads, 15x7 wheels, no sways, no areo, 1.5 camber. If you throw FI at your current beginers setup its just going to make the car a handful.

Stick to tires that don't heat cycle out like Hoosiers. When your a newb your not consistant enough to know when they are shot. So stick with a tire thats good until it cords. RA1 or NT01

Run a man wheel 15x8 with a 205 or 15x9 with a 225

Run a man alignment 2.5-3 degrees camber all around

Run man spring rates 800/700 front to 300/450 rear

Run with big sway bars

Run some man pads

Play with a splitter/diffuser

Don't flip off friends in the hairiest part of the track and then almost loose it...

The fastest lap I saw you run was a 2:40...

2:32 on rt-615 195's

Well your kinda close

HP10 pads
Hoosiers have a weekend on them, have been running some RA1's that were beat
Correct, no sways yet
700/375 SR's
2 degrees of camber
15x7 wheels (C1's with -15offset)

My setup (he has Koni Race up front and sway bars) setting track records for Nasa Mid Atlantic

Im not making the power a Spec Miata is, nor do I have the track time - my best lap of that weekend was a 2:35. Not disagreeing one bit im still a noob and plan to do damn near every NASA event next year like I tried to this year.

At the MOMENT I personally enjoy having a fun battle with someone on the track, chasing someone down and getting around them than I do going for the fastest lap time (dont get me wrong thats still awesome to accomplish).

Like I said earlier .... Ive been signed off for HPDE3 but may stay in DE2 just for the instructor for a little longer. I damn sure dont want to go to DE3 and be the the slowest car on the track and pointing every single car by.

The only thing that could of made last weekend better would be some speed down the straights, I could of read a book. Summit Point isnt so bad, its only one long straight.

Again not arguing, I do see the points of learning the car more before FI, but damn those straights are so long haha.

02semiata 10-19-2010 01:42 PM

Why are you not on street tires.

jacob300zx 10-19-2010 02:53 PM

I know nothing about NASA :giggle:, carry on with your ubbercharger:noob:

Ran all DE1 and sometime in DE2 on street tires. NASA is the only SANCTIONED track event ive been part of, we rent out blackwaters road course once a month and race there. So as far as "HPDE" goes ive done 8 events .... but as far as being "ON TRACK" a bit more than that.

The car is a track car, it will always be on slicks now that I have them. I have a turbo foxbody for my driver on the street.

So why is it important to know what a street tire can do on a N/A miata if the miata will always have slicks on it and not be driven on the street?

Still waiting for an actual point on why a blower is bad, youve yet to provide that.

You are correct im still learning my cars limits, but if im going to do hp level change like that, wouldnt I want to learn my cars limits with that power before I go TT ?

Awesome Im a noob, but please provide me with an ACTUAL legitimate answer on why a blower is so terrible ... or just cop out and call me a noob all day, which im ok with. Congrats on being a miata owner longer than myself.

Im not looking to run spec miata at the moment, im looking to run with a pack of cars and work my way through them, which again .... is more fun than running with no one and getting your fastest lap time.

Its just odd to see a new driver on slicks. You learn a lot more on street tires. Its also a lot safer and cheaper. The only time I plan to run slicks in during a real door to door race were I need it. I don't know slicks seem like a waste to me. I am to lazy to spend the money or change the tires when I get to the event. O well

JETSWU87 10-19-2010 04:51 PM

Different strokes for different folks bro's.

02semiata,

His car is trailered, changing tires isn't a big deal. I'm assuming you've never been on race rubber.

jacob,

You're build you listed is great, for someone wanting to have the best DE car. However not everyone is into that. Depends if you're building the car just for DE's or to run in a specific TT/PT class.

Mike,

Reason guys run street tires for so long is to find the limits of the car, on something forgiving. Adding sticky tires too soon can give you false sense of security, and overall make you slower then a guy who already is completely capable of driving his car on the edge because he knows how the car feels on weight transfer etc vs tire noise etc.

02semiata 10-19-2010 04:54 PM

Yeah I am on street tires. I have no plans to change to a R-comp. This past season was my first so maybe after a couple of seasons I will switch.

You have already made up your mind so there is really no point in aurguing with you. If you want to have better lap times and trounce people on the straights then go get your FI on. If you actually want to become a better driver you need to work on your fundimentals. I'm not the best driver, but I'm also not getting trounced by 8 seconds by a guy on 195 Falkens and stock springs either. Your too cocky for a newb as seen in your videos and posts. I hope your supercharger helps you get faster than the 195 Falken guy.
