roadster != coupe

Project84 06-17-2009 10:59 PM

Seems like a SHITLOAD of work to make a coupe in such small production. Why not just get the tools and scatter abundances of them on lots. I'm sure a lot of the "I want a porshe but not the porsche price tag" croud would gather to drool.

miatamania 06-17-2009 11:47 PM

Now, that plus mazdaspeed would have been interesting.

:werd: Mazda could have pulled that off without too much work and certainly marketed it under 35k. Talk about a corvette killer, damn (at the time anyway, 2004).

I'd love a Miata Coupe. There a few pictures floating around somewhere of the NoPro widebody NA and NB coupes too, they look good (minus all the decals).

Here's the bare skin shot.

Welcome back!
You must have been living under a rock to not know that Mazda made NB coupes right before production of the NB ended...which is part of the reason they didn't send them over here. Assholes.
I would LOVE to get my hands on one of those Coupe front bumpers like what's pictured on the yellow car.

Saml01 06-18-2009 11:35 AM

^ It was designed in California. Im surprised they werent sold here.

Doppelgänger 06-18-2009 11:54 AM

I just want the part number of that bumper.....

cueball1 06-18-2009 12:28 PM

I hate car companies. Why didn't they produce any volume? Why the hell didn't that car come here? Every car company out there could easily produce interesting and fun cars. Why don't they? Committees ruin everything.

gospeed81 06-18-2009 12:56 PM

I'm sure they did some research and found out REAL QUICK that 99.5% of the target demographic wouldn't pay an extra $2k for a Miata that isn't a convertible, regardless of what 90% of an enthusiast website would prefer a decade later.

Doesn't mean they don't fucking suck for not bringing it here in volume though.

cueball1 06-18-2009 01:54 PM

Again. Committees and it was 5 years ago, not 10. Obviously they didn't think it would sell in volume but why only 200? If you build any at all you should at least give it a real shot to recoup the developement cost. Since it's a one off of a car already in production it wouldn't have to sell huge volume. It wouldn't likely have canibalized Miata sales either. It would have been a new segment in the market. Other than exotics, Mercedes, Porsches and the BMW z4 coupe what other two seat coupes were on the market? The MR2 was on it's way out and majorly fugly compared to that car.

I like my convertible but give me the same light weight, nimble car, quieter, with a much stiffer chassis and I'd replace my convertible as my daily driver without a second thought. Would be a track day monster too.

can you imagine how many would end up dead in a 300whp miata mass marketed to the general public?

gospeed81 06-18-2009 02:49 PM

You're right cueball1...they were idiots for not making this thing. Especially considering how easy Miata's are to upgrade, and with huge aftermarket support. I would LOVE to have one. I hardly every drop the top, and the whole time I was putting in the roll bar I just kept thinking about all the added mass, and how much it would hurt to hit the thing with my head (even with padding). I'm sure the hardtop weighs a little more, but is probably equivalent to all the stiffeners we add to get the same sturdy chassis characteristics.

Not to mention it's absolutely gorgeous. It's also distinct. It may not be as different looking had they sold a few here, but I can't think of anything below $50K that is close to that look and layout.

I wonder how much better the aero is on those?

I did see the Autokonnexion fastback Miata in Super Street (don't ask...I waiting on a prescription, thank hustler for that), and despite the incredibly crappy as usual writing and upgrade list, I thought the package was nice. It still doesn't look near as nice as this NB, but even the NAs beg for the rear half of the car to be completed.
