Our father son miata project

Well my stepdad and I decided we wanted to do a little father son project and so after doing some research we picked up our white 1995 miata and are turning it into our own autocross/track beast!

Here it is the day we picked it up.

That will have to be addressed soon.

Dirty engine bay

I went to a subaru meet this weekend and while I was gone Eric cleaned up the engine bay and replaced the leaky valve cover gasket. He also gave the valve cover itself a little makeover while it was off.

We ordered up our first parts bunch on friday. I'll post up some pics when we get it!

akaryrye 03-02-2009 01:15 AM

Good deal man! Are you planning on turbocharging it or leaving it stock? Personally, for a dedicated autocross car, first thing I would do is suspension and tires. Turbo makes the car a lot more fun on the street though.

gc8pat 03-02-2009 01:19 AM

It'll definitely end up turbo at some point, but we're focusing on the other parts of the car for this season.

clay 03-02-2009 07:22 AM

What did you use on the valvecover? Looks great and I'm researching how I'm going to do mine.

keg97 03-02-2009 09:48 AM

Very cool bonding time. My old man and I did the initial fluid maintenance on the Miata last summer when I brought it home. The wives were so proud.....

gc8pat 03-02-2009 10:58 PM

I believe it was just krylon crinkle red spraypaint that we got at O'Reilly Auto Parts. I'll double check but I'm pretty sure that's what it was.

Thanks for the comments guys!

p51hellfire 03-03-2009 01:05 AM

Dang he cleaned that engine bay up nicely

Nice project car. My dad and I bought a 1958 Jeep CJ-5 that had been sitting for 15 years when I was 11 and we did a frame-up restoration on it while he taught me all of the basics about cars. With a top speed of a frightening 40mph, it was no Miata though.

are those the new Kumhos?

gc8pat 03-05-2009 05:30 PM

If the new kumhos are the ecsta XS then yes, these are the new kumhos. Can't wait to try them out!

thesnowboarder 03-06-2009 12:42 AM

Looks like it will be alot of fun!

coastertrav 03-06-2009 02:09 AM

Sweet project man, keep up with the updates!

curly 03-06-2009 07:49 AM

If you're just autocrossing it, tear that rear finish panel off and call it done. Its a bit of a mroadster look, but it'll be better than how it looks now, free, and you'll gain performance! (weight loss is everything!)

Awesome progress glad to see you guys making some progress.

How do you like those kumhos? I'm trying to decide on a new tire to put on soon.

gc8pat 03-06-2009 09:15 PM

Haven't really driven on them enough to really get a feel for them yet. The roads around here are pretty much covered in gravel from winter so I have yet to experience a lot of grip. They ride pretty quietly so far. That's always nice.

Maybe I'll post up a review when we get some autox time on them.

Buffed her up today and painted the wheels metallic black. We're pretty happy with the results. She shined up real nice! Sorry about the terrible lighting for the wheels pics.

**********UPDATE**********
Well we cleaned the car up quite a bit since my last post. Eric painted the bottom half of the front bumper and our repaired finish panel. Our Hard Dog Hard Core roll bar arrived and is now installed. We snatched up some of the smoked lights from ebay and got a cupholder and new shift knob. We just can't stop tinkering with this thing!

speedf50 03-23-2009 03:25 PM

The car is looking MUCH better with the roll bar, nice work!

I'm not sure about the silver centercaps on the wheels though... each to their own.

SmartDrug 03-23-2009 03:30 PM

Looking good!

gc8eric 03-23-2009 05:34 PM

Thanks for the comments! I know what you mean about the center caps....not really our favorite either but its what we have for now. Our next upgrade should be next week when we recieve our Sparco R100's.

Car is coming along nicely, keep up the good work and keep us posted.

Ill trade you my bg s kit and my mega squirt for the baller ass cup holder!

gc8eric 04-04-2009 11:51 PM

Dont be afraid to say how you really feel about the cupholder! When you get old like me you have to have such a device. Keeps the coffee off the boys! LOL

We took the car out for its first autocross today! It was all kinds of fun! I can't even begin to describe how crazy this little thing handles. It felt like driving an oversized friggin go kart! It was a pleasant surprise to see that we kept up with some of the fastest cars at the event. A porsche caymin s only got me by 1 second haha.

I think we all know who ran the faster time  but eric did walk away with the novice 1st place award. Not to mention he finished off the day with a giant drift around the final 90 degree corner. Miatas getting sideways ftw!

Since we are on a turbo forum, one can only guess it might be a turbo?

Looks like you two are having alot of fun. Enjoy yourselves!

miataspeed2005 03-24-2010 06:19 PM

Yes I know, I wanted to know more details about it.

gc8pat 03-24-2010 07:28 PM

I'll post the mods list when we've got everything. Yes, it will see boost

flier129 03-24-2010 09:29 PM

I should start a project car with dad, it'll be my car, his money, sounds good. :giggle:

Looking good, I've always liked STS miatas. There's a part of me that wishes I should of kept my car STS legal, I'd be a much better driver, but there again I wouldn't of experienced BOOST!

Theres a local guy, raced solo1 forever, puts up top 5 RAW times every event in his STS miata. We have a s/c'd elise prepped for SSM with a good driver and a ~240rwhp nb with 275 A6's with a good driver as well.

Good luck with the rest of your build!

turotufas 03-25-2010 02:24 AM

Turbo!

If I can find a shell for my dad we can have our own father and son and son who couldn't even do a wire tuck if it weren't for me project.

Good luck.

dgmorr 03-25-2010 05:29 PM

The scenery looks amazing. I wish I lived near some real mountains. Nice project.

gc8pat 03-26-2010 01:36 AM

This miata's the family car. It'll be hilarious to see my mom trying to drive it when we're done. Who knows, maybe she'll love the boost. I know I'll be grinning like an idiot every time I drive it.

I'm on the hunt for a miata of my own to be my autocross thrash toy. I love my subie but it's so fragile and I just know I'll blow something up if I race it. The miata's taken everything we've thrown at it and begged for more. So I'm looking for a cheap one to stay in sts for a while to work on my driving skills. Of course this one will see action also, but it'll be nice to have one of my own to really polish my skills with.

FastColt 03-26-2010 09:10 AM

I know its a few months old, but i was serious about the cup holder lol. I want one real bad, its one of my wifes biggest complaints about the car. Also no mirrors to check her make up. lol. Nice progress man, car's looking good, just about time to join the dark side and slap a turbo on there...... :)

Well after what felt like forever and a headache caused by the engine shop, then that issue somehow slipping past the dealership, we started the car tonight after the engine build and turbo kit install.

It's alive! (my mom was a bit excited lol)

I fixed your video link, for the future, just click on the IMG code, that will automatically copy it. Then click in the text box on mt.net and press ctrl-V.

Congrats on getting it going, now enjoy it!

gc8pat 03-12-2012 12:46 AM

Thanks curly....but that's what I did?

Work? Haha I've got school tomorrow (senior in college). Maybe I'll call in to work tuesday... lol. It'll see action as soon as the weather gets better. I guess we've got another cold front moving in. Plus I need to get back to work on my new daily driver 240sx, which needs an engine.

curly 03-12-2012 12:56 AM

It might've just had a signal "[" deleted by accident, I didn't look into it much.

gc8pat 03-28-2012 11:53 PM

After learning a bit more about the megasquirt and adjusting my injector dead time, the car idles pretty well. I got to it today and got it all set up. We just got home from the first drive about a half hour ago and I couldn't be happier with the results. After a little smoothing of the map, the car is very drivable in town and cruises at a safe afr in every gear. I'm sure the fuel map is going to have to change drastically when we can give it more throttle, but for now at limited throttle and not going over 3500 rpm or so it's going great!

Can't wait to drive it again. Hopefully we'll have it out tomorrow. So far, 35 miles on the engine.
