'Photoshopping' for

Why do some people insist on using excessive edge preserving smoothed filters (what it is called in Paint Shop Pro) to make their cars and/or installations look cleaner than they are? It is pretty clear, to me anyway, that those photos are processed to make everything look cleaner. One very recent example looks like a cartoon. I say chill, and just show it how it is.

Here is an example of what I am talking about using photos from my engine bay. Before and after:

Braineack 04-13-2009 10:12 AM

judging by the dirt on your filter...i'm thinking the second one is doing nothing.

ZX-Tex 04-13-2009 10:39 AM

no it is fine actually. the first one is just brand new. But I could photoshop it and make it red if that makes it look better. easier than actually cleaning it.

Braineack 04-13-2009 10:49 AM

excatly. i think the problem is people get a little overzealous with noise ninja.

Cheap cameras, like the camera on my old cell phone (HTC Tilt), take pictures that look like your "after".

People use that shit to cover up all their lazyness. I'll sometimes do a little contrast/color editing just to augment a picture a little.. but not very much.

The shit that I get sick of are people thinking that buying some fancy SLR instantly makes them some kind of pro, or people who take shitty pictures and post shit like "i know these are shitty cell phone cam pics.. but here they are and tell me what you think anyway"..then you tell them how shitty the pics are and they get all offended. Assholes. Shit, i've been using a Canon Powershot S5 and my pics have come out better than people using shit that costs 2,3 and 4 times more expensive...

Oh and the shit now that EVERYONE is putting some dumb watermark on their pictures like they are a professional photographer :gay:

But here is an example of the little changes i'll make to a picture...ok, so this one is a bit more than I usually do.

Before:

And here is an example from another large forum of the bullshit i'm talking about. This guy takes like 400 pics of anything he does. He is using a Nikon D40 and soesn't see anything wrong with these pics. I went through a photo album of his and I was amazed to see any given "day" of pictures had almost identical camera settings (all he would do is barely move the aperture setting..but everything else stays the same). And the people on the forum thinks it's all "hawt" and "great pics!".....morons.

note all the grain..mostly caused by over processing the picture

The high end digital cameras do have a place. If you are shooting low light, or action (sports photog), the sensitivity of the imaging sensor makes a difference.

The camera ends up mattering less than the glass. A high end lens is faster and sharper.

But you can take a lousy shot with a great camera, and destroy a good shot with stupid over processing.

The cool thing about digital photography is that you can afford to take a ton of pictures and learn from your mistakes. On old cameras, it was ruthlessly expensive to take the number of shots necessary to learn how to take a good picture.
