After I cut the hole, I still have to attach it and bondonto gaps, sand and paint
Attachment 199996 |
This reminds me....I gotta finish mine too. Too bad mines not carbon.
|
Looks good. You should have made it bigger.
|
Yeah I wish I go the 4" one instead of the 3" but it doesn't look as bad in person, it will still flow enough air for the intake I think.
Cspence go work on it so we could all do that meet by apr/may. |
hey you didnt let the cutting tool go wild on your paint, nice job. I've done two and both times I've slipped once and it made me a sad panda.
I had to cut the 4" down and make it .5" shorter, it's still larger than your 3" but it was too long and hit the headlight when mounted. |
The paint is a little messed up and there's a little section that I cut a little too much, but a little touch up paint, some wet sanding and a new clear coat will make it look nice I hope.
|
Looks good, where did you pick it up?

Looks great! You did a smooth cutting job on that lid.
|
He got it off me.
Looks great btw! You can get em at mckinney corp website for like $40-50 per duct |
|
Well you motivated me. Ran out to lowes and picked up some adhesive and glued mine on....bout time I finished that project anyways, thanks!

Whats the website to buy these ducts?
|
I think I would have put the lip of the duct on the outside to cover the curvy/not smooth cut. Otherwise it looks pretty good. Larger would be more win.

How did that PL adhesive do for you....I used it on mine last night and today when I was checking on it I noticed that it was basically lifting off my naca duct. After 18 hours of curing I was able peal it all off in one huge sheet. I'm not sure what the problem was...I mean I roughed everything up and cleaned it with acetone prior to application. Maybe its the type of plastic my duct is made out of. O well, I am redoin it right now with epoxy. Yours is comin along good though!

Really? I used that stuff on everything, I basacly did the same as you scuffed it up, acetone and applied.

18psi I don't know if that was a good or bad comment |
Your bumper is hurtin, what are you replacing it with? I vote black for the hardtop. Naca duct came out quite well.

Im assuming the same one? They dont look that bad. Isnt there supposed to be a piece across the bottom of your bumper?
|
Same bumper but made out of duraflex which is supossed to be more flexible than fiberglass and it won't break with any little bump I hit

I used JB weld to attach mine and fill the small gaps. +1 on the sharpie touch up too.

I'm not sure why you guys aren't using jb weld or gorilla glue?

I used expoxy to secure the flast side to the bottom of the lid, then fiberglassed the fuck out of it.
JB weld is a pathetic excuse for a product. |

Will add my carbon fiber NACA duct DIY to this thread, hope you don't mind.
Bought for 10 bucks of craigslist. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6190.jpg Made scratches on the lid where bondo will go onto. Then taped the duct side where it will bondo to the lid (so I can lift it off later after the bondo). Then taped it onto the lid. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6203.jpg Taped the opening. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6200.jpg Side shot of the gap that needs to be filled with bondo. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6201.jpg Filled the gap with bondo, then took off the duct. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6206.jpg Wet sanded to a smooth surface. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6207.jpg Epoxied glue the NACA Duct to the bondo surface. Then can spray painted it with a few coats at a time. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6214.jpg Wet sanded the paint and then layed 3 layers of clear coat afterward. Then wetsanded again to smooth out bumps. Then compound waxed it to a glossy shine. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6232.jpg Peeled off the taped section. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6233.jpg http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6234.jpg http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6241.jpg Used the small net grill section that came with the bondo for the rear, (bent the piece to a soft corner "S" shape) and used epoxy to hold it to the back of the lid piece. http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6244.jpg Laid down some more glossy wax and "Ready for my close-ups." http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6245.jpg http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6246.jpg http://www.t-netzone.net/miata/nacalid/_MG_6248.jpg |
Since this is the unofficial "post your NACA ducted headlight lid" thread, here's mine.
- 3" duct - JB weld as adhesive and filler - flat-blacked the sides of the duct It came out just okay. If I were truly baller I'd have done like Pharo_X did and repaint the lid. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...68746291_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...97619443_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...06552942_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...82278580_n.jpg Looking back through the thread, most aren't as inboard as mine. Mine's about as far back and as inboard as you can get too, I had to cut the bolt the housing pivots on for clearance.. |
How are you guys tracing the naca hole onto the lid?
|
Observe my first pic, I just cut a template from the duct and plopped it onto the lid.

Just make sure to place yours further toward center than I did, lest you have to trim your bolts for clearance.
|
That seems to be a great idea and I think I should try it in my one too.
