I had fun. I was dorking around trying to dorift this open diff car.

I'm bringing this car to the Evo I and II schools at Devens, Mass, May 8-9. Anyone going?

Actual content starts at 1:00-videdit fail.

Nice looking ride. STS is some of the best fun I had in my old 1.6 car.

Thanks. STS in an early car or STR in something like an NB Sport are pretty much what I think may be a sweet spot for Miatas in autocross. Sometimes I wonder about the wisdom of going as far as I have to build up for SSM.

As mentioned, I have one more full weekend to play in this car. Evo school at Devens Mass on Saturday and Sunday. Looks like it may rain to make things fun for Saturday, then dry and cool on Sunday.

This little car has been nothing but fun during every event I've done with it. It's just not the fastest car out there.

SeAD 05-16-10

Glen Region in NY hosted an autocross at Seneca Army Depot in the Finger Lakes of NY. This is one of the premier autocross sites in the Northeast. I was in the STS car, again. I got beat by 2 sec by a pretty nicely prepped and driven ST Civic Si. I haven't gotten results yet, but I'm hoping to be making a slow and steady climb up the PAX.

Little STS car pulled 1.0G consistently, 1.09G peak! This was on street-driven full depth Ecsta XS on heavy spec Miata wheels, FM KYB suspension. Finally unhooked the rear sway bar, as I was getting lots of inside tire spin, this and lowering rear pressures helped hook better on corner exit.

looks like a ton of fun. good stuff mayne

More: I had better not start to get too used to this ride! I could almost start to like it enough to switch and do a REAL STS build. Don't think I don't already have a little list compiled: SSR 7.5" or Enkei RPF1 wheels, shaved RS3 or similar, some nice revalves with heavy springs, RB fsb with either stock or no rear, RB intake, nice spec Miata exhaust like a 949 or Springfield with a Supertrapp to quiet it down, light pulley, flashed ecu, then do a fresh built ART motor over next winter.........

Ended up 12/69 in PAX. Awesome results, better than I expected. Both car and driver have lots of development potential (ie, I suck), the car is heavy and ill-prepped. With better prep and better driving, even still a bit heavy, the car could pax at least 5 spots better. The Miata is a good/great STS car. Still a debate whether the early 1.6 with vlsd or the 1.8 with the open (a rules thing=no torsen in STS) is the better STS car, but I wouldn't hesitate just to build up this Montego '96 and let 'er rip.

Watched the first video, STS cars are always fun.

Any reasoning you use 11 and 1 o'clock hand positions? :giggle:

I want to make an Evo school soon, but I'll make due with advice from the local Pro's that instruct some.

webby459 05-20-2010 08:23 AM

I use 11-1 so that I can look cool and have a gangsta lean.

It's really just a fluke that I have to get out of, I don't even drive like that on the street, not sure why I autocross like that.

The Evo school is well worth it, if you can afford it. YMMV, but at a regional school you won't get as much attention, nor will you get the same consistent message sent from the instructors. Evo has a really set and well laid out curriculum among the different phases, and the instructors really buy in to the message within each phase. It was an expensive weekend, but I got more out of it than I thought I would.

My region's first official event. I placed first of one in STS, and first overall for all street touring classes. I'm still waiting on the PAX results.

I still exhibit some shitty tendencies of goofy hand placement on the wheel and more sawing at the wheel than I should.

Have I already said that an STS Miata is fun, even one that's not well prepped. Hmmm, makes me wonder....
