Nooooo! RIP Miata
I was in an accident today, the car is almost certainly going to be totaled. A guy in a new Camry came flying across 4 lanes of traffic right into my driver's door and rear quarter panel. I was actually very impressed how well the miata held up, the camry looked much worse off. We (boyfriend and I) are both doing fine, aside from a little soreness.
If anyone local-ish has a spare cheap 5 speed/open diff/1.6 drivetrain they'd like to sell before the insurance adjuster can take a look at it next week, please let me know.

Do not take the car to a shop. Have it towed back to your house and then have the insurance adjuster come out to look at it. Until you have signed over the title the car is yours, and you can do whatever you want to it, and the insurance company can not say jack ****.

Definitely a touchy situation when you have a $4000 car with $+10k in parts on it. Hopefully it works out.

It's not touchy; it's your car. They want you to take it to them for their convenience, and I thought I heard you say your back hurts too much to deal with that.
Sorry to see bro, but glad that you are ok.

Definitely planning to get another. That is the Camry in the background. It ended up into some trees, but any damage it took was compliments the miata. I should have gotten some pictures of his damage, I feel like his crumple zones saved my life, that thing took a beating.

The car is at my house now, had it towed there after the wreck. The insurance adjuster insisted they had to take the car to their salvage yard in order to appraise it, but I've got several days until that happens (after the police report is filed). I'm going to pull the turbo/manifold/exhaust/piping/intercooler/injectors/megasquirt (**** I'm going to lose my COPS).

Ive been through this before. The insurance company is going to try to bully you around. Tell them it stays at your house until it is paid for. You need a rental car until they finish the claim process and hand you money for your car. Don't let them record anything over the phone. And I'd get a lawyer. Get whats yours before they screw you out of what you have put into your car.

That sucks, you're car was awesome. I got hit like that only further back (right quarter panel, no door damage). The insurance company valued my car at $10K it's an 01 so they might appraise yours for more then your expecting.
Edit: I worked at a bodyshop when that happened. The car might have been totalled but we worked deals and got used parts. Also they didn't initially estimate the soft top had to come out to do the quarter, which probably helped save it because time for that is a lot.

Man, why does every Miata I work on wind up getting totalled by a Camry?
If there's anyone left who I've done ECU work for that hasn't been hit by a Toyota yet, I advise you to give them a wide berth.
Sounds like he's looking to score the best of both worlds- full payout from the insurance company plus keeping the valuable bits by swapping them out with 1.6-style parts.
