2 years and i finally post.

Ok i have been lurking on most of the miata forums for about 2 years and rarely post. My car isn't anything special yet, so i don't usually do a new guy post.

I had a 93 miata that had way too many problems. I got rid of it and ended up buying my brother's 90. As soon as I got it, i swapped my suspension and all my other mods over to his.

mods so far:
Flyin' Miata Vmaxx coilovers
NB wheels with 195/50r15's
Hard Dog HardCore RollBar
R type front lip
Flyin' Miata Exhaust
Used Hard Top

Car came with an unknown hub and steering wheel. On to a few pics.

Car looks like a good starting point for boost. Get a MS soon and tune it n/a and have fun, then aim for some real power.

And if you keep spamming to get to 15 you're gonna get a warning real quick.

that's fine. I'm not really spamming. I do perfer my 1.6L to my brothers 99 1.8L. He even agrees that mine is more fun to drive.

Sounds like you and your brother are definitely from the same gene pool.

18psi 06-03-2013 02:24 PM

OP - you were off to a decent start. Then you went and messed it up. But not all is lost for you, so do yourself a favor and don't go full retard.

BTW: anyone that drives a 1.6 and 99+ back to back and thinks the 1.6 is more fun or faster, or zippier, or whatever pixie dust fairy tale gayness you wanna sprinkle on us, is out of their mind, or there is something severely wrong with the 99 engine.

highrideTOY 06-03-2013 02:25 PM

nice concealer. you double posted as well. I didn't mean to double post. I'm sorry that i don't post for almost 2 years, then actually get bored enough at work to post. I usually just read and learn as much as possible. I shall refrain from posting anywhere until i get 30 from this thread. Does that satisfy everyone?

There is hope for you yet :)

highrideTOY 06-03-2013 02:27 PM

I never said it was faster or anything even close. I just said it was more fun to me. It a personal preference and my opinion. If you think otherwise, then that's awesome. To each their own.

thenuge26 06-03-2013 02:30 PM

How about actually adding to the value of the site instead of posting inane shit everywhere?

yea, I'm trying. I'm usually on M.net most of the time. still rarely every post, unless i'm having a problem with my car.

on a side note, I have been trying to figure out what my next mod up to $500 needs to be. I don't think i can find a MS for that price. I also don't have any tuning shops closer than 3 hours away. I have been thinking a oil cooler and more gauges for my DDM works radio surround. Thoughts??

only if you bring your own helmet and life jacket.

You don't say...

You can easily get an MS for <$500 and who cares if there are no shops around to tune it, you have a PC don't you?

The Miata.net thing really explains the silly 1.6 fanboi-isms.

Gauges for what?

If i had $500, i'd throw it in the bank and save more for worthwhile modifications.

You should be able to find a Megasquirt for that price quite easily. Spam more posts and you'll be able to see the classifieds.

Seems like a lot of work.

Wanna buy a built 1.6 before i throw it in the trash?

My oil pressure gauge died the other day, so i bought an aftermarket one. I also want to monitor my engine vitals a little closer. I already have another 1.6L sitting in my garage. It will get built over the next couple years.

Yea well, I have a PC, but i don't trust myself to tune my car. I would probably find a way to screw it up.

thenuge26 06-03-2013 02:44 PM

If you are on a budget and you don't want to tune it yourself, it's probably better just to quit at this point.

highrideTOY 06-03-2013 02:48 PM

let me rephrase, I would like to learn more about the tuning process. I just want to make sure i don't do a stupid mistake and then blow my engine up. I know i need get a wideband to monitor the a/f ratio for tuning and also having other gauges to monitor the motor helps as well. I just really don't want to have to swap motors for the third time in a year.

just to clarify, i bought 93 with a bad motor and had it rebuilt. The engine builder screwed up the piston rings and ended up burning a quart of oil a week. I then had to swap a used motor back into that car to get it running.

thenuge26 06-03-2013 02:51 PM

So you paid someone to do something you didn't want to screw up, and they screwed up.

Now you want to pay someone to tune your car?

highrideTOY 06-03-2013 03:06 PM

well, after i go turbo, then yes. i would like to learn to tune an N/A engine, but i want to learn more about it first.

concealer404 06-03-2013 03:07 PM

Then get a megasquirt and get to tuning.

Then gently raise the spoon that you have delicately just filled with delicious cow's milk and Lucky Charms to your mouth, opening your mouth as you do so, and deposit the contents of the spoon into your oral cavity. NOTE: Do not attempt a deposit until the concave portion of the spoon has entered your gaping maw in its entirety.

Good try, but I think OP's feeding is best left to the experts at this point.

i'm sorry that i have never once messed with an ECM or ECU. the car is my DD and i don't really want to mess it up. I will look up the reviews and such on the megasquirt and see if there are any disadvantages the MS has, that others don't have. I will check out any install threads as well as initial setup threads. Are there any particular members' threads i should look up?

Ah, then you're in the right places, then. :)

Fireindc 06-03-2013 03:33 PM

I see NO problems at all with keeping your 1.6, boosting it properly, and having fun. However, trying to convince yourself that the 1.6 is better than the BP4W that comes with the 99 is full retard. Maybe the NA miata is more fun than the NB to you? That would make more sense. A BP4W in your NA would blow your mind.

thenuge26 06-03-2013 03:37 PM

If "don't talk about how much you like your 1.6" is the first rule of Miataturbo.net, the second rule is "don't turbo your DD without a backup car".

If you don't want to mess up your DD, leave it stock or get another DD.

highrideTOY 06-03-2013 03:38 PM

yea, i said earlier that it is just more fun to me. It's not always about speed. It's the enjoyment factor as well.

I will agree that his will blow pass mine everyday of the week. Mine will never be better than a 1.8. I know this, but I just like the underdog kind of thing.

i have a backup vehicle, but it won't be running for a little bit.

That is fucking stupid. Reminds me of the ------s on CR who say they'd rather lose a race with ITB's than win a race using a turbo. Like somehow the visor tilted bro in the mustang is gonna give you mad props for not keeping up.

Ryan_G 06-03-2013 04:44 PM

I put a megasquirt in my my DD having never used a soldering gun let alone touching an ECU. It really is not as complicated as it seems. You can get a good base map for a stock engine and you should only have to tune the fuel which tunerstudio can do automatically while you drive. Sometimes you just have to jump in head first. You will also be starting out N/A where there is much more wiggle room without blowing the engine.

you misunderstand. I like my motor, but there is another 1.6 in my garage that i will be fully building for a turbo. My goal for that motor is at least 250 hp, but really want 300hp. That is a goal that is going to take a very very long time. If i had a 1.8 in my garage then i would use that, but i don't.

Braineack 06-04-2013 05:44 AM

highrideTOY, congrats on signing up at the best site on the web!

timk 06-04-2013 07:22 AM

I put a 1.6 flywheel on my 1.8 and it makes it rev really sweet like the 1.6 does. Being a 1.8 though not only does it rev nicely but it actually has balls.

It's pretty easy to throw a 1.6 in the trash and pick up a 1.8 for peanuts.
