So far as I know, the coating which was applied at the factory is made from a mixture of unicorn blood, graphite, and the tears of orphaned children. It's not something you can just buy off the shelf.

Joe thank. I'm new to miata only had mine for 2100 miles.. Want to check timing but can't find 12volt source under hood like forms show for the NA cars. What do/have u used for power source?

Well, since I have two NAs, I use the blue connector under the hood. My timing gun even has a mating connector for it on the end of the positive lead. :D

Honestly, I have no idea where the NB guys draw power for their timing lights. I guess you could pop open the diagnostic connector which should be located near the exhaust-side shock tower and jam a wire into the B+ terminal. When I took the red car in for a smog check the very first time, the poor fellow couldn't figure out what to do, and wound up pulling another car up next to mine to use its battery. You could buy an extension cable that plugs into the cigarette lighter outlet and cut the end off of that, I guess...

It's kind of a moot point on the '99 and later cars, as there is no way to adjust the timing assuming you have both a stock ECU and a stock crank wheel. That wheel (a thin metal plate) is sandwiched between the crank pulley and the crank itself, and has four raised teeth. The sensor which reads it is bolted to the oil pump, on the right side as you're standing in front of the car looking back at the engine. Neither are adjustable in stock form.

On the left side of NB motors there's a bunch of emissions crap.

A few of the connectors have white wires with red stripes. Stick a paperclip in the connector and voila enough power to electrocute a midget.

Battery lug on the alternator is where I get my +12. One question though, is that TB on a '99 or not? Seems to be a discrepancy here.
