Another lurker de-noobing himself...

Figure I'd finally post an intro to myself... I bought myself a shitbox 90 1.6 miata to get back into racing... I've owned turbo hondas, and a few subarus including my SM class STi that was stolen... :(

I love the car, but it needs t3h boost... So I recently just purchased:

1.6 Greddy manifold, turbo, oil lines, and elbows
TurboTony Downpipe
Tan Top Injectors
Vortech FMU
Heat Wrap for the downpipe

Trying to decide if I should get an o2 clamp or not, as I do a lot of mountain driving... Also just need to pickup a wideband, and a 3/8 barb for the return, and I think i'm ready to install..

I plan on running 5psi on the kit, and will be adding a bov because the wife wants the psshh sound :giggle:

Am I forgetting anything here?

More chalkboard red...

I ended up not particularly liking the way the chalkboard finish was going on, so I'm now in the process of vinyl wrapping the car... No pics until its done though... ;)

All over New England & New York... I'd call it more "hills" than mountains... Not like i'm climbing pikes peak or Mt washington with this thing lol.

As far as the wife's mountains... Not yet... I don't put them out there for just anybody... You gotta earn the right to see those mountains.. :giggle::giggle:

:bowrofl:

bro that is awesome

matthewdesigns 06-19-2012 01:13 PM

Chalkboard paint is great. I have a spare trunk lid that's flat black, and have thought about tossing it on the car and riveting a bucket of sidewalk chalk to it so people could draw on it. But that could end badly lol.

Glad you have the sense not to post wifey pics :D

No.. The awesome part is that it was $7 to do both doors.

If it were black, it would have been easier. It would also have been easier if i had a garage... The temps in new england just haven't been cooperating...

And I post pics of the wife on some forums... Once they earn the right.. ;)

my friend had an old shitty Taurus and redid his entire interior in gay firemen fabric. I don't have any pics but I guess I could check his MySpace.

Really? People still use Myspace?

triple88a 06-19-2012 01:42 PM

Pushy does.

As far as ur build thread, why not just run a real standalone like megasquirt and get rid of all the failaids?

nperkins 06-19-2012 02:21 PM

I'm going to build myself an MS one of these days, but for now with what i'm going to be doing with the car, at 4-5psi, it will be fine with the FMU...

I bought a wideband, and this isn't my first turbo rodeo, so I know if my foot is on the thin pedal and the wideband says 12.XXX or higher to let off... I also know if I hear marbles rolling around in the engine to let off too lol..

I think I may have a J&S safeguard laying around in a box somewhere too i can throw in..

I was also debating an MS sooner, but we just booked a cancun vacation in september, and then the next day found out we have termites lol.

it's the only place I thought pics might be but I couldn't find it. I never made a MySpace but they were popular my senior year of high school.

I personally know 3 people that ran the greddy kits on FMU's for 2-3 years without issues... Then most of them typically did 1.8 swaps with MS..

We used to run FMU's on hondas years ago too for long periods of time without issues...

I see your point, and I know that MS is better... Hell, i've even tuned it (I was a honda/subaru ECU tuner in a former life), but right now, I just don't feel like doing it.

Holy crap I never updated this...

Lets see... I got the car running on the Greddy kit with FMU & O2 Clamp. It worked okay, but I didn't like the mid 12 AFR's up top with the Tan top injectors...

I also had a misfire that was giving me some issues, I think because the coilpack got wet. So I made up a COP conversion..
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367254925
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367254925

Then I had a friend's shop make me up a 2.5" exhaust to mate to the TurboTony downpipe... Its pretty much the same as a DP6061 exhaust.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367254925

Picked up an autopower roll bar, threw that in, and made an obnoxious cover for it.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367254925

I got a great deal on a half finished DIYPnP, along with some RX7 550 injectors, and retuned it, and eliminated the AFM... Also picked up a PLX Wideband.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367254925
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367254925

I was able to get to 150whp and 140wtq with the DIYPnP on the dyno, but I was seeing 200 degree intake temps due to no intercooler on a 90+ degree day & weak dyno fans, so I had to finish up the tuning on the street.

I also couldn't take the awful chalkboard paint anymore, so my friend let me use the booth at their shop and I painted it flat black with autozone paint shop paint...
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367254925

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367254925

Here's two shots on the dyno...
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367254925
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367254925

Oh, and I wanted to be able to Datalog without the laptop, so I modded my tombstone to hold my tablet, and got a Bluetooth Serial dongle for datalogging. I still need to get a TTL converter so it works reliably though...
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367254925
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367254925

Did my first long distance road rally in August, with no issues at all... Even after going 200 miles in 2 hours including a fuel stop... Spent 100+ miles over 5000 RPMs in fifth gear, and over 20 miles straight over 6000 rpms... Car took it like a champ.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367254925

That's about it for the rest of the year... This year, I haven't done anything other than change the oil and drive it... I did go to my friend's shop's dyno day last weekend, and they made me throw it up on the rollers...

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1367254925

Not too shabby. I love the torque curve, even though its a little low. I'm very conservative on my timing since I beat the crap out of the car so much... I'll be adding an intercooler soon...

I think that about covers it for now.
