big question about cold air and turbo
hey guys. i asked this on clubroadster but they told me you guys could help me better. i cant decide between a cai or turbo. of course money is and issue and ive found a cold air kit for 200 bucks from a mazda speed. i also was looking on ebay and there was a t3t4 turbo kit for 400 bucks. would that kit actually work or is it spam.

The 400 turbo kit is a terrible joke and will cost you easily 4x that amount to get your car running OK.
This forum has a wealth of information on turbocharging your car, check out the build thread section, there is one going on right now where the person is trying to spend as little as possible. I think it is called project cheap. There are also several threads discussing ebay turbo kits and how shitty most of them are. Check the stickies in the DYI section. Make an intro thread and prepare your anus. |

While it's not impossible that you might be able to document a measurable gain from a well-designed "cold air intake" system, mentioning such a thing in the same light as a forced-induction package (especially on an otherwise stock engine) is a bit like comparing the smallish piece of gravel that I kicked while walking down the sidewalk yesterday to the moon. They are simply not in the same league. As to your eBay find, while there certainly have been a few folks around here who have managed to piece together working turbo systems for ~$400, I'm afraid you're not going to be one of them. Don't take that as an insult, I just mean that this is a feat for the truly wizardly, not the sort of thing you buy from a guy named "moarspeed4yu" who has 437 positive feedbacks, all of which are identical. Good things cost money. If you want to buy a complete turbo kit, with all the parts needed for safe, reliable operation, new, expect to pay somewhere in the vicinity of $1,500 at the very least. MJ. I'm sure why you're here is that you've noticed your Miata in stock form is slow as hell in a straight line. Even though the car doesn't weigh anything, it's still just got a 100hp engine more or less. You're looking for a bit of "pep", aren't you. Or maybe you're looking for more. Please tell us what you want your Miata to do that it doesn't do now. Then tell us your budget. Then tell us your skill level for doing work yourself.
There are a multiple ways to go about getting you to your goals depending on what they are and what particular year Miata you have... so, what year is your Miata? A very basic reliable turbocharger setup from a major manufacturer will get you about 150hp and cost around $1600. It goes up from there fast. I would not recommend you start down the turbocharger path unless you can afford that amount up front. You'll also need a new clutch to handle the power... budget $400 for that. So, unless you have $2k to get you started, there are other options. These other options won't get you as much power, and there is no "path" to greater power from doing them. They're usually one-time little tricks to pick up a pony or two here and there... but they do add up. And again, they all depend on what year Miata you have. So, answer these questions: Your goal. Your budget. Your skills. Your car's year? And please tell us if there are any other modifications done to it... trim level, transmission, power options, etc. |
