Car is at BEGi, so time to say hello
I should have my car back in a couple days, so about time I say hello and get up to speed on having a turbo Miata and all that it encompasses.

A little too much interior bling for my tastes, but there's no doubt it's a beautiful example. I see the tires are Toyo T1S? I ran those for awhile and they're great at stock power levels. The T1R even in 195 had much better straightline grip. You're gonna want to be "aware" of running tires that skinny at the power levels you're gonna be making. Granted, I ran 185 Zeix 912's at 230whp for a few months, but only in the rain.
What turbo did you get and what injectors? Style bars are universally frowned upon around here. They look cheap, do nothing for performance, and are worse than nothing in a rollover. Keep us up to date on your build, and put your location in your profile so if there are any locals near you, they can offer their support. |

On our cars, the mesh grills act like a wall at higher speeds. Many will advise against them. Some say the more open the mesh is, the better, however, when I took the one that came on my car (which was very open mesh) out of the grill, my post-IC and coolant temps dropped. Just for curiosity's sake, I put it back on and they went back up. |
well, a Le Mans car has an opening beneath the hood, and so do we. So yes I guess we do have Le Mans cars.

Our cars also do not have the aerodynamic design and ducting that the LeMans cars have, so no we don't.
But in the interest of going back and forth pointlessly, do what you wish. I'd simply advise against it. I'm not the only person to have temperature issues with a grill, hell, I'm pretty sure this forum is the one that advised me to take it out of the mouth anyway, and with positive results. |

Welcome to the forum and you'll Love dealing with BEGi. If I ever need anything they are always there for me. I'm starting my engine build after Christmas but when it's done Stef is coming to H-Town to tune my car for 17psi which should put me around 324rwhp. With the SSM you'll have tons of upgrade potential and TRUST me, YOU WILL WANT MORE POWER after the first few weeks. Boost is as addictive as Crack, maybe more so!:)

Matt - I've seen you around the forums and talked to Corky about your setup. I'm also friends with Larry Bader and I'm not doing anything even approaching that level of horse power.
As not to mislead anyone, you should realize where I'm coming from. This is almost a 16 year old car with 180,000 miles on it. It is a daily driver and my commute to work is only 15 minutes. It is a fun toy. As mentioned above, We installed the BEGi-SSM kit with a Mega Squirt, stainless dual downpipe, braided steel lines, cold air box, ceramic coated turbo, coolant reroute and a boost gauge. No injectors and no intercooler. It is only setup for 5-6 psi or less than half a bar. For horsepower and speed I've had a turbo NO2 street/drag Ninja (9.25 qtr w/31 psi), a modified Hayabusa (180mph), a Hemi Satellite (600hp) and still own my 1955 Belair. I've been wrenching and racing for over 35 years. So, I'm no kid. I'm just having fun. |

You have everything done, all you like is a universal Ic and some used RX7 injectors to reach the sky! Well you may need a clutch if you don't already have one. It just almost seems like a waste to not use it's full potential. I give you six months, and you will drop in a universal IC and injectors for 230hp. LOL You have had the power bug for a long time. LOL And with everything you have done in the kit. It would never get hot. Your setup is what most of us are striving for. Or me anyway. But yes it will still be a beast at 6psi, and a blast to drive. Yes the folks at Bell are top notch. I took two days off work and spent it there documenting the install and helping out where I could. Corky has forgotten more about boost than I will ever know. Steph is a sweetie and not bad with a soldering iron. Larry is just plain cool and a terrific wrench. Tim has absolutely mad fab skills. Hank and the whole gang know their stuff and are nice guys. I could kill some serious time there.

Toddcod - thanks for the input. Next week is for some engine seal maintenance and while the tranny is out I'm dropping in an ATC clutch kit that should be here in a couple days.
Yes the odds are good for getting nuts with this, but for now, I'll start slow on this block and have some fun. To get serious, I would want to start from scratch and bullet proof the bottom end. Then while that is being done, my buddy could throw the head on his flow bench and do some grinding. All in good time. |
A few of you have mentioned the style bar. I know, I know...it is there to hold the custom windscreen when the hardtop is off. It just looked better than just having the sheet of plexiglass up there. I run with the hardtop on most all the time. It serves no protection purpose.

It is a BEGi that is now on my car. You do have to replace the top middle two studs, so they don't hit the tubes. Should flow very well.

As Luther mentioned, he and I have known each other for a couple of years. He is a detail oriented dude with several interests and toys to go with them.
A touch over a month ago he started fishing for info on FI, leaning toward SC. A few well placed posts/PM's and redirection to a call to Corky and he's already boosted. (Sorry Hustler, but yes, he makes you look like a slacker...) What I am looking forward to is the near OCD-level photos and descriptions I know he plans to add to his turbo website. Hi Larry, we do need to get together during the holidays and compare installs. I will have my car back in a day or so. I plan on taking it to Foreign Affair on Monday to have some seals replaced and have the new ACT clutch put in. It is always something.
