Completely lost..
Hey everyone. Im looking to pick up my first Miata, a '90-'97 but as the title states, im a bit lost. I traded in my Camaro SS for a Genesis coupe, so i miss having a fun car. I still have a spare LS1 in my garage and was wondering if its worth dropping in? Id like to see around 400 whp. any advice would be great. thanks.

Welcome to the site. As for the LS1, it's definitely not just a "drop in" situation, but it's certainly been done before. There are quite a few kits out there if you're not up to fabricating stuff yourself and there should be plenty of information available. As for the "is it worth it", I don't think anyone would argue that it's a better powerplant to start with.

If you're going to do a motor swap, the LSx is as "easy" as anything else, with more reward for your work.

While there are a couple here, you aren't going to find much info here on MiataTurbo on V8 swaps. Miata.net has a forum dedicated to that, and there's tons of info on the web in general. It would be a total blast, and I'm starting to daydream about an LSx Miata myself.

It all depends on your skill. If you're doing a motor swap you'll need to do body stiffening anyhow so both platforms will be a good choice. Over here emissions are not done on obd 1 vehicles so if your location is the same that will be something to think about. 96-97 are obd2 models.
There was a dude selling a supercharged vett powered NA in cali i believe. |
Call FM about it, discuss it, and when you decided its too much of a ball ache, buy a turbo setup for them and go for the same power, rejoice when you feel the boost!

Welcome to the forums. Expect 325 whp when swapping in a stock LS1; you'll need motor work to get up to that 400. I would drive the stock LS1 in a Miata first before going for that '400' goal; it's a lot to handle on its own.

well, i have the stock ls1 because i swapped my SS with an iron 408. if i do drop it in ill have it machined to atleast a 402.
