Cruise Control
I just purchased my 2005 Mazdaspeed Miata a few months ago. I miss my "Cruise Control" on long trips. Our local club does alot of long weekend trips. NO one seems to know why there is no cruise on the Mazdaspeed. Can anyone give me an answer? Thanks

Who knows? Mazda decided they don't need cruise control. with that said, you can retrofit it I am sure. The cruise is comprised of a switch, the stalk (used for set/accel/decel/resume), the actuator, and the ECU.
Everything is pretty easy to pick up. The switch you are looking for is probably the dual purpose foglight/cruise switch. the stalk, I can't help you there. The actuator and the ECU you can pick up from an NB. I would probably go with a 2001+ since the ECUs out of the 1999/2000s had issues. a BJT/MOS would burn out eventually and shit wouldn't work out right (someone did a fix for it though). You can do some searching on googlez to get more info on cruise control retrofitting. |
So you're suggesting a non-turbo ecu on his mazdaspeed? Hmm...
At least his CC will work. |

I think your assumption is correct. I am running full standalone megasquirt, and my stock ECU is still in my car, but there are no wires going in/ out of it. My cruise control still works as it did when the car was new. ('99 NB) Therefore, the cruise has to have it's own ECU.

Ah, my mistake. All I heard was "ECU", I suppose "CC brain" would be applicable, but it serves me right for think after being up all night.

The CC has an control module independent of the actual ECU (engine control unit??). |
So what you guys are saying is I would have to install a separate ECU Just to handle my new Cruise Control. Which would be in addition to the one that is on from the factory?
|
no, thats not what I am saying. Ignore the fact that the acronym is the same. just call it a CCU (Cruise Control unit? lol), its a small box that controls when the actuator is turned on and off. it is completely seperate from the ECU that controls your engine.
And yes, you do have to buy one. they are really cheap used, contact partsgroup or treasurecoast or panic motorsports. |
Well that depends, where in PA are you from?

Thirdgen, I am in York. Not being a mechanic, this gets very confusing to me.

In reality an aftermarket cruise control will probably be easier to do. you will just some kind of switch to add in rather than using a stalk off the steering wheel like you would expect.

You should definitely call Steve at Panic Motorsports.
