finally going to turbo my Miata

Hello everyone I'm new here and boy do I have a lot of questions. My 91 Miata is stock. My goal is to get around 200whp. I'm planning to do this starting now and hopefully be complete before summer is over next year.

I want to buy an ECU and EV-14 550cc injectors. My plan was to get this soon so I can learn how to tune. My first question, I was going to buy a MSPNP2 then I came across diyautotune's website now I'm thinking of installing their MS2 w/PCB3. Has anyone tried these? Next question I might be able to pick up a 94 Miata with blown engine for around $500. Is this drive train heavy duty enough to support 200whp do I install the tranny from the 94 also? I've read that the 1.8 NB's can handle up to 400whp but can the NA1.8? Well thats enough for now any help would be greatly appreciated.

concealer404 10-01-2018 01:18 PM

400whp at least, bro!

albumleaf 10-01-2018 01:20 PM

NA is lower compression than NB so 400whp is waaaay easier.

hammer11791 10-01-2018 01:24 PM

I'm only getting the 94 for parts it has a big whole in the side of the block.

acedeuce802 10-01-2018 01:25 PM

I've seen a plethora of questions about DIY MS2's that don't start, and people questioning what mods need done and such. If you want to cheap out, get a DIYPNP, it's a straight forward build and will drop right in a Miata harness. If you were willing to drop the coin on an MSPNP2, but can read instructions well and can solder, get an MS3+MS3x (see guide on trubokitty.com). MS3 opens up a lot of possibilities, and just plain runs better than MS2, due to it's speed and driveability adjustments. If you just want it to work, get an MSPNP Pro.

Other than the diff, basically all NA and NB's have the same torque limits. The rods go around 250 wtq, 5 speed at 250 wtq, and 6 speed at 300 wtq. Those numbers will go up or down based on how hard you use it (ex: endurance racing will lower the limits significantly, where some people can push 300+ on a 5 speed by driving easily on the road).

Just keep reading. Make sure you're 100% confident about every step in the tuning and turbocharging process before you do anything.

Must've been that nasty whole in his fuel map.

I read that they are discontinuing the DIYPNP so that may not be an option for him. I was lucky to get my MS2 for cheap before that.

They are keeping the Miata models. They are discontinuing all but 2 models of it, if I remember right.

18psi 10-01-2018 05:28 PM

ms3. nothing else
do it right one time

hammer11791 10-02-2018 12:19 AM

What does the ms3 have that the ms2/extra doesn't. I'm pretty clueless trying to read about these ecu's. Diyautotune doesn't remanufacture ms3's anymore. They build the ms2/extra. I have no clue if this is as good as the ms3.

get an ms3 basic from trackspeed and dont look back.

its plug and play, and has all the features you will ever need.

https://www.diyautotune.com/product/...-57-assembled/

Is this what i'm looking for?

der_vierte 10-02-2018 04:18 AM

no

hammer11791 10-02-2018 06:32 AM

Well I think I'm going to go with the ms2pnp. I just can't spend $1200 to $1400 on a ecu. Unless I get lucky here in the next week and find a used one.

sixshooter 10-02-2018 07:04 AM

There are a whole lot of differences between the ms2 and ms3.

Btw, have you read the DIY FAQ sticky thread? It's an old thread but it's got some important info.

hammer11791 10-02-2018 11:27 PM

Read the DIY sticky it didn't help me with my ECU questions at all.

borka 10-02-2018 11:37 PM

Good: MSPNP2 $800
Better: ms2 enhanced from mslabs ~$800 (more features than mspnp2)
Best: ms3 basic from Trackspeed (also made by mslabs) $1099

pick one, be happy. All will make car run just fine, from mild to wild turbo setups.

ms3 will be easier to get day to day quirks worked out for closer to stock car behavior.

ridethecliche 10-03-2018 12:53 AM

https://www.miataturbo.net/miata-par...ssembly-14598/

Brain still sells the MS3X and it costs significantly less than the 1400 number you made up.

The only time I'd consider a MS2 is if you're 100% certain you don't want to use EBC (bad idea) and you don't want vvt (shrug). I'm not sure if the rev based unit is any different for these factors for the MS2, though it very well might be because he's a wiz.

hammer11791 10-03-2018 01:34 AM

yes your right I was wrong $1100 - $1500

MS3 Pro Ultimate Standalone Engine Management System & Harness Megasquirt 3 Pro

borka 10-03-2018 01:59 AM

Its 10 fucking 99 for an ms3 basic, 795 for a ms3x.
Why are you being so thick and again posting links to irrelevant non plug and play, non miata specific ecu's??

Noob, you want a plug and play unit.

I'm done here. Good luck. And may the force be with you.

ridethecliche 10-03-2018 02:15 AM

For srs. We can only do so much, ya know.

Have fun OP! Hope you're prepared for quite a lot of heartbreak, frustration, and wasted money/time!

Are you people really that clueless? Go back and read this thread I let the first couple slide.

Schroedinger 10-03-2018 01:46 PM

Nobody here cares about your butthurt. You came and asked for help, it was given, you didn't take it.

That said, IMO the Megasquirt FAQ is hopelessly out of date and isn't very helpful.

I run MS2. It works fine for what it is. It meets my needs right now, and it may meet yours. Only you can determine that. If I were to do it again, I would do MS3x. All the stuff that makes your car run properly, and is difficult or time consuming to tune, works better on 3x.

Key differences:
- closed loop idle control
- electronic boost control
- enrichments
- VVT control

So if you value your own time, spend the money on 3x. If you don't, get MS2 and spend extra hours trying to optimize a much more crude tool.

I'm not. I do not accept that sort of trash on my site either, so i'd appreciate it if you wouldn't point him there.

You own club roadster? didnt know that. OK.

Do you own mt.net? or moderate it? i fail to see how you can ban me here. and im not a member of CR

lets be civil, no need for threats. what you said could have been just as easily typed up without threats.

" Dont refer this kind of trash to my site " . would have been plenty clear.

sixshooter 10-03-2018 02:53 PM

Lol.

While it's nice to be important, it's much more important to be nice.

Banned from two entire forums in one day, haha. Entitled snowflakes...

I'm not banning you here. I'm simply saying don't refer trash to my site, or i'll ban you there. I'm not a mod here. If you're not a member on CR, then it sounds like you're safe. I'd still prefer you don't send any garbage there, though. Won't gain you many friends here.

Super simple stuff. Direct trash to M.net. They like that there. :) I'm not being combative, no need to get touchy.

Don't threaten me with a good time revealer303, I'll cheese curd you so hard borka will smell it in Flawda
