Finally Introducing Myself

Hey everybody, I've been a long time lurker soaking all the great info on here. I have a stock white 1990 miata. I got it for free from my Aunt on my 16th birthday (I'm lucky I know). I orginally thought it was a car for gay hairdressers haah but I kept it and it has really grown on me. I totally love it now. It is my DD and I just did my first autocross with it last weekend. It has about 93,000 miles on it.

I go to school at Rochester Institute of Technology for Mechanical Engineering and I'm from Hatfield, PA (45 minutes north of Philly). I just finished my third year. During the summer, I do coops and make some money. I then spend a some of that money on my car. Last summer I took care of some exterior issues (I did two donuts on an icy highway and hit the gaurd rail. I also had a tire blow on me on the highway and I ended up in a ditch (maybe I'm not so lucky haha)). Anyway, I replaced the fenders and hood, put on a racing beat body kit (now it looks like its driven by a less gay hairdresser), put on a robbins glass window top (the old plastic window cracked in the rochester cold) and got it all painted at Maaco. I did all the work myself except for the paint job. I wish I had, I couldn't of done a much worse job then Maaco but I only had a week to get all that stuff done.

I've been taking car of all the maintenance for it (timing belt, brakes, all that good stuff) and just finished replacing the clutch. It went out after my fifth autocross run of the day :jerkit: so I missed my last run. There is another autocross next weekend that I will be doing, and I'm trying to convince my girlfriend to drive the car as well.

This summer I'm down in Huntsville, AL working for Toyota. I'm looking to take car of safety stuff now. I'd like to pick up a Kirk Racing Roll Bar since they're made right in Birmingham and I don't have to get it shipped, and maybe a seat to go along with it. However I'm 6 foot with a long torso and I'm concerned about a roll bar since it's my DD. mgeoffriau also had a kirk bar and mentioned on here that it seems to be better suited to shorter people. So I'm still deciding what I'm gonna do.

Eventually I would love to turbo this car and get it up to around 240 hp, but slowly so I can learn how to drive in the process. I would be autoxing it as well as putting it on the track, but it would still be a street car. Then once I get a job and all that good stuff I'd like to get an NB and put in a V8 for a dedicated track car and this car would be my fun street car.

Sorry for the mini novel guys. Just trying to denoob myself as much as possible.

Thanks for reading

My car is pretty dirty from changing the clutch right now. I'll try and wash it today and get some pics up for you. Just a warning, I don't have a camera so they'll just be pics from my phone

I'd get a rollbar you know will work if I where you. That said, it looks pretty tall to me:

yeah, I like it because it has the door bars and a harness bar already, so its way cheaper then an equivalent hard dog or boss frog set up. I'm trying to find someone local that has the bar in their car to see how much lower I would have to sit

Here's how the car currently sits:

In other news, I have decided to not get a roll bar for the time being. The Kirk bar sits too far forward and does not allow the use of the stock side latches for a hard top. I'm not comfortable with a bar that close to my head on the street.

Instead I got in on the frame rail group buy and I'm just saving my money

Good decision, btw if you think that you may have to replace the soft top, do it while your doing the roll bar, it'd make things easier.

Thanks, I actually replaced the soft top last summer though. The plastic back window cracked in the freezing weather in Rochester. I'm probably going to end up with a Hard Dog bar, but I don't really like their door bars. There's not really a design out there that I like :(
