first miata and addicted to auto x
After 2 autocross events i immediately sold my fwd car for the beloved miata. Not really knowing much i took a friend with me to look at a few. I ended up getting pretty lucky and finding a red 99 sport package for a good deal. Im now on AST's, super charged (i know this is a turbo forum :bigtu:) And im pretty competitive at local events. I recently pulled my motor and im finally breaking down and learning to post. Im not a total newb, but im a quick learner. Any advice on engine builds from anyone who sees this im more than welcome to hear..

As someone who is also about to build their engine, I advise you keep reading. Everything you need to know has already been written.

Yea i know, this site is extremely valuable. I have read a decent amount, and based on a few things i have read i plan on building the bottom end mildy. And top end pretty much comes down to the rest of my budget. My builder right now is recommending porter rods, and wiseco pistons. I know wiseco is a very reputable brand, but i honestly dont know much about porter. Any advice?

If you are even considering an $800 set of rods for a SC autox car, you haven't read enough.

Listen I plan on being at around 16 lbs of boost on e85.. I want to have an over built lower end.. For a couple hundred bucks over Manley or eagle, it's worth it too me.. Say what you will..
|
i dont know that there is any benefit on using pauter over manley or eagle... almost positive they are made exactly the same, maybe slight difference in "architecture" (?)
it may be one of those things, where you are paying for a name... Hydra ECU's are more than DOUBLE the cost of other DIYPNP setups (MS), but nowhere near as good... its cool to spend money where it matters, but only IF it matters. |
But, regardless, sounds like you have a fairly sound plan, so long as your wallet agrees with your decisions. lol
Welcome!!! |
Ebay rods would be overbuilding the bottom end.
You asked for advice. If you want you can send me $800 and I'll send you my $400 rods that will still take more power than is possible to put through a BP. |
If you were going to run 50lbs of boost and shoot for over 500whp the Pauter rods might be a worthwhile investment. But to my knowledge no one has yet broken a $300 set of Chinese forged rods.

Appreciate all of the positive advisors out there i am definitely reconsidering.. Believe me i don't have a huge wallet, not looking to be the jerk off who buys name brands just cause. thanks again
