Forum Noob w/ ITB NB named Scooter

Hi all,

I'm new around here, although I've lurked for years. I got my 1999 Miata in 2017 and managed to leave it untouched until 2020 when I thought it was time for some Xidas, and it all went downhill from there. I started my car journey affliction with a 1993 Mitsubishi 3000GT, then a 1992 Dodge Stealth RT/TT (still have it), and then the Miata captured me. Damn it. I also have a 94 Cherokee with a 4.7 stroker among other goodies.

Anyways, these are the specs and a few pictures of my Miata

Engine:
  • BP-4W
  • Borla Induction 45mm Throttle Bodies
  • 3D printed Carbon Fiber 60mm velocity stacks
  • DW 550cc injectors
Exhaust:
  • NB2 header (soon to be a Racing Beat 4-1)
  • Cobalt midpipe w/ Catalytic
  • OEM replacement muffler with a comically large tip...
Electronics:
  • MS3Pro PnP running ITB mode fuel and spark
  • CANChecked MFA 2.0 gauge
Suspension:
  • XIDA Race Coilovers
  • Poly bushings with bronze bearings
  • R spec tie-rod ends
  • -2 camber all around (maxed out the front :/)
Interior:
  • Carbon fiber Exige Replica seats
  • Driver seat bracket is bolted to the floor without rails, so I'm slammed low in there
  • Miata Roadster angled shifter
  • CANChecked MFA 2.0 gauge
  • Radio delete
Chasis:
  • Blackbird Fabworx GT3 Rollbar
  • Flyin' Miata frame rails and butterfly braces V2
  • Paco Motorsports strong arms
Exterior/Other:
  • OEM Hardtop
Adding lightness:It is still slow in a straight line, but boy it handles and snorts really well. I rev it to 7500 RPM, track it as much as time allows, and drive in the mountains weekly. It's name is Scooter, and the 177k mile engine is tired, but somehow still lives. I've acquired a spare engine to build into a 11:1 compression, 1.9L (bored) snorty boi sometime next year. I don't have any power figures planned, but want to hear it rev to 8k RPM once in a while, 7500RPM sustained at the track with a 6 speed. So that's me. Feel free to checkout my videos, pictures and tune on my google drive and Youtube. Any constructive criticism is greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forum. What part of the world are you in?

Northern NM, judging by the track (Sandia Speedway) and scenery in pics.

Cool car dude, wish it was at Sandia when I was there on Oct 1st. We also have a track down here in Deming, a few of the ABQ locals just attended our final event.

Yep, you got it. And thank you.

I was going to go Oct 1st but had a fuel leak show up that Friday. I intend to participate in the Super Lap Battles next season.

My friends and I have been meaning to take a trip to Deming and checkout the track there. Maybe we could get in touch when we do?

You likely met two of them on Oct 1. Michael (Gray Lotus Elise) and Richard (Gray WRX STI)

Gateway drug indeed. Tipped me off the cliff in a bad way.

Over the holidays I decided to try the new Link G4X Plugin for the NB1 and the car is running very well so far. I'm on target to be able to go to the ABQ Super Lap challenge this season after I bleed the FM LBBK again, bed the pads and do a bolt check. Here are a few pictures of the Link.

Nice choice in ECU, I have one in my own car, and recommend them to all my customers. Hard to say no to a cheap MS, but link is leaps and bounds better in my opinion.

I’m loving it so far. I had finally gotten MS3 to have acceptable driveability during warmup thanks to X-Tau, but Link has taken it to almost OEM like driveability in less than a month of tinkering.

Do you have any literature, video or course recommendations to learn more about Link or tuning in general? I’ve read a couple of books and watched a lot of videos from Haltech, HPA, Andy Whittle, but I’m always looking to learn more. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately no, most of my experience is first hand, starting with another tuner, and so far I've tuned a half dozen more. Their forum is incredibly helpful, every post is answered by the incredibly knowledgeable admins.

Understood, and thank you.

This past Sunday was the first ABQ Super Lap of 2023. Checkout my hot laps on the tube:

Unfortunately the Jongbloed wheels didn’t clear my rear FM brakes so I had to take the Konigs in Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires, aaaaand I flat-spotted one :noob:. I was far from my PB but I couldn’t ask anymore out of these tires. Regardless, it was a blast and the car didn’t skip a beat.

A couple of shinies I decided to install before the event:
- Toyota COP conversion. Sequential ignition
- MPI Mazda Cup wheel, hub and NRG quick release. All SFI rated

Really clean car man, the whole build is top notch.

Great driving too, I saw you nailed some 1:37's last event which is moving! See ya next event!

Thanks! Super nice meeting you today. The car should be roadworthy again for the next cars and coffee June 3rd, and should be at Super Lap in July. Currently getting it ready for FM Summer Camp trackdaaaaaay.

I can't help but keep messing with stuff, so before the latest track day Scooter got a Fluidampr balancer and a 36-2 trigger wheel.
Here is the latest video of ABQ Super Lap Round 2 where I set my all-time PB of 1:37:752 and got fourth place in my class:
