French Mx5 turbo

Hello guy.
Here from France, runing (...trying to) a NB 1.8 turbo build.
All by myself. I'm not a welder, but i learned by my own.

Welcome to the forum. Nice airbox and heat shielding.

DNMakinson 04-07-2020 07:49 AM

Nice. The thermostat neck block-off plate may be a bit thin. Time will tell.

Post more pics, please.

EDIT: I just came back for another look at that gorgeous cold air box.

Looking good, love the fabrication work and how tidy the engine bay looks. That's a 1.6, right?

it is pretty, isn't it.

HarryB 04-08-2020 04:05 PM

Confused, as the intake manifold looks really familiar (I have a 1.6).

You sure its 1.8? That is not a bp4w intake manifold. Looks like a 1.6L manifold.

Nbfl 1.6 had all the digital cam sensors like the bp4w, but were 1.6L

HarryB 04-09-2020 04:53 AM

Exactly why asked in the 1st place. Does not matter much, as the car looks awesome in any case!

Daim you are right...it's a 1.8, for 100% sur, but with a 1.6 manifold fited by the prévius owner ? So strange...
I have a blow engine, with a différent intake manifold, i could do a swap if necessary.
Don't inox who is the best

I am pretty sure your intake manifold is from an NA 1.8 and not an NB 1.6 (it is again a different manifold).
You might want to check your cylinder head, because NA intake manifold and NB heads are not compatible (different intake manifold ports).
Maybe the previous owner used a cylinder head and/or block from an NA. So check if your head casting is a BP-05 (NA) or BP-4W (NB).
I think you can put a valve cover of the NB on the NA head, so maybe the previous owner did just that.
NB (BP-4W) cylinder head, intake manifold and camshafts are superior to NA (BP-05) in standard form.

What did you do to fit the Subaru brake calipers? What size brake disc do you use with the Subaru calipers?

renardracer 04-10-2020 05:34 AM

Hello guys
Well, nice job to you, you were right, my head is a BP05. I didnt knew. AT this point, i will mesure the camshafts to know who they are...

For the calipers, i made a template, and machined brackets to make them fit.
I will check if i have photos of it.

renardracer 04-10-2020 11:51 AM

I Don't know how to check if the engine IS a complete BP05, or just thé head.
do you have infos ?
What about it so ? I Saw the camshafts are not NB, i guess it's NA1.8
is there différences ? Compression ? Volumetric rate ? Cooling ?

AT least, i made a good looking NB bay 🙄
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d1547ce68d.jpg

I welded some plugs on the vent, and improved the internal ventilation. No more PCV !

sixshooter 04-10-2020 03:35 PM

The NB head flows more air than the NA head due to differences in the angle of the intake ports. Don't worry about it. Just enjoy what you have.

you are right...
I will soon change the timing belt, it could be the good moment to change the camshafts. you know guys if the lifts are différents ? NB are more agressives ?

sixshooter 04-11-2020 05:51 PM

NB uses mechanical lifters and NA uses hydraulic lifters. The mechanical lifters will require shims of various heights and will require measuring and disassembling multiple times. There's not much difference in cam profiles. The largest difference is the head. But that is also minimal. Once you add a turbo you won't know the difference. If you need the 8 or 10 horsepower difference between the heads just turn up the boost 0,25 psi. It is not worth the effort to change cams or heads if it runs fine and you are not rebuild the engine.

HarryB 04-12-2020 06:22 AM

Exactly what six said. Car looks well-build and modified, so enjoy it without worrying about the details, especially if everything works as they should.

I've not seen anyone with Subaru brakes yet. Very nice.
