Greets from Chicago

So I've got a 93 and I've decided I'm going to go boosted as the stock motor isn't giving me power that I want for drifting. Yes I know, drifting is stupid, waste of money, but so are cars in general.

I've never boosted a car before, so this will be a brand new experience. I have been doing a lot of reading and hopefully I am heading in the right direction. I've read decent things on Chinachargers so I figured that setup will fit my budget.

My plan is to run a t3/t4 ebay churbo (something like this: T3 T4 Hybrid turbocharger Kit T3 T4 Turbo 3AN Oil Feed Downpipe BOV Stage 1 | eBay )

Make my own manifold from the great examples I saw in the DIY mani thread, using stuff for Weir Tech.

Using either 1.8 or rx7 fc injectors (probably rx7, as my brother has a set)

Custom downpipe/3" exhaust

Simple oil line kit (ebay any good?)

DIY Megasquirt that I plan on assembling and installing before the turbo goes in so I know what I'm getting in to (never tuned before)

Small intercooler

My goal I would say is to reach 200whp, I'm guessing I'll need a new clutch for that, which is fine, I'll worry about that later.

Is this a feasible idea? What type of psi should i be aiming for that type of power? T3/T4 doesn't come with an internal wastegate, correct? Best location for external? Or can I get one internally wastegated?

Gotta love constructive criticism.

Kero, welcome to MT.net. I live in Gilberts North of Elgin and I am doing a parallel install of a MS3x. If we have decent weather I will probably be doing it in a week or two.

(megasquirt is built, re-reading everything and double checking all my work now)

If you would be interested in attending my attempted first start send me a PM with your number. If the guy who is letting me use his garage (heat and exhaust vent in this weather is a must) will let me bring guests I don't mind having a few spectators that can watch and suggest things if we have problems.

BTW - where did you get the car? It reminds me of a car that raced autox last year...

kero 12-26-2012 01:28 PM

I appreciate your offer and I am definetely interested. I will pm you my number, just send me a text.

I got my car off a guy in Evanston, he said he was planning to do autox, but I don't think he ever did, the car was on blown konis and had a depowered rack.

Shut the fuck up.

Don't come back until you can recite this on the spot.

Edit: and change your fucking dash. jesus christ that is embarrassing.

Edit2: welcome to the forum.

curly 12-26-2012 02:25 PM

You'll need the RX-7 injectors. The 1.8 injectors listed in the DIY FAQ thread are only for auxiliary fuel pressure regulators, which increase fuel by increasing the fuel pressure, the injectors themselves are not much bigger than stock.

The RX-7 injectors are to be used with the MS, are about 4 times bigger than stock, and the MS manipulates the injector pulse signal to control fuel.

Welcome. Do indeed change the dash and get rid of anything pink and green.

Welcome, my best suggestion is to save up and increase your budget. Anyways, best of luck and nice to see another local on here.

Ugh... glad I'm not part of the Chicago miata crowd anymore.

kero 12-26-2012 03:05 PM

.I figured the bigger injectors was the way to go, glad to confirm. While increasing the budget would ofcourse be better (even though I have nothing set) but for 200 I don't think I need a lot more, and I realize the turbo is considered a doorstop (I was looking at some godspeed ones) to real performance enthusiasts, but I think it is a decent start point for me to figure out the ins and outs of what this entails. Once I.have my setup in place, what's to stop me to strap a different (garrett etc) turbo on there?

Braineack 12-26-2012 04:55 PM

Welcome, kero. Check out the Miata Gallery and post up some pics!

You definitely don' t see these kids at club events. I think there' s an underworld somewhere in the city that sucks all these cars up and spits them out in random fluorescence. All the drafters are drinking Miata cool-aid lately.

That roll bar looks like it kills all your seat room. You must be really short, I'm 6" and no way I could drive a miata w/ stock seat without it being all the way back.

kero 12-26-2012 06:05 PM

The car does look a bit funky as of right now, it's going to be purple, so the green should compliment it nicely (hopefully)

As for the roll bar, yes with the stock seat it sucked, I am 6' as well, but with an aftermarket seat it's really not that bad, it's a miata not a limo. The steering wheel is what I had trouble with at first, this is why I got a cheap smaller one for the time being. I really didn't see any way to weld the bar in that seemed sturdy, I've seen where the bolt on ones ,go, but proper weld in needs room for 6x6 inch plates, under it, that's why it went on the floor, the rear goes through to the trunk and is welded parallel to the strut towers

Enginerd 12-26-2012 09:27 PM

Purple should compliment green perfectly.

:riaa::barf:

Barney will love it!

Between the non cross braced rollbar the colors and the want to drift with a shit setup I want to purge the city of this

I bet he bought it for 5000 bucks

The rollbar I would argue is probably sturdier than your average bolt in. My rear mounts are in the trunk over the frame rails, and no I did not pay 5k for a beat up 93. You say it is a shit setup, but in the end power is power. Besides, turbo can be swapped out as soon as I get the funds. I don't really see anything else 'shitty' about that boost setup besides the chinacharger.

And yes I did read the sticky.

Also thanks to everyone that welcomed me in, whether it was criticism or a nice
warm welcome, thank you!

Maybe you did some fea on it and are using super thick tubing or something but I've never seen a good roll bar without some cross member in the main hoop

Yes the 5k was sarcasm I looked for about a year and a half before I picked one up since all the ones around here are rusty or molested. Hopefully you picked it up for a thousand or so.

Don't kill yourself and welcome

njn63 12-30-2012 11:05 AM

Welcome Kero. You're going to need a thick skin around here but people know their stuff. Just don't expect help with a drift setup. :giggle:

This.

Although there is a fair amount of Miatas at the club events that have their own set of problems.

I expect to see your Fiat at some WCMC autocrosses this year.

Outside of the front anchor locations limiting seat travel I don't really see anything wrong with the rollbar. As long as it's the proper thickness it should hold up fine if the car ever rolls pursuing mad tight doriftos.
