hello from Akron-ish Ohio, 93 NA soon to be Cartech turbocharged...

Hi, my name is Jesse, I've been lurking about for a little while reading with the intent to add boost to a 93 miata. Happened across a deal I couldn't pass up, so here I am. I picked up an older Cartech/Begi turbo kit with an IHI turbo, intercooler, bypass valve, and much piping.

Naturally, being 2nd/3rd/4th hand there are no instructions... Corky @ begi is looking around for some old copies of the instructions for me, so i'm hopeful on that count. Regardless, I'm sure I'll have some silly questions to ask.

I've read Brainiac's diy turbo info post a few times, and am reading Corky's Maximum Boost book, so hopefully I have a good start.

I also have a 91 miata with FM suspension and other goodies, an old FB '84 RX7 w/ a small block chevy, a 4wd winter beater, and another ground-up project in the stables.

Thank you,

Jesse

Born in Cleveland and a Norton HS grad from WAYYYY back.

You're definitely going about it the right way.

Plan on doing a Megasquirt and up-sized injectors. In fact, I'd install and learn the Megasquirt and the larger injectors (delete the AFM) before installing the turbo. Makes things super-easy.

1st gen RX-7 with a SB. That must be a hoot.

Thanks Hornet - not sure about the right way, but Some way at least... No plans for megasquirt for now, hoping to tune with just the boost referenced afpr, larger 1.8 injectors, and a wideband o2. Maybe some sort of timing retard as well, like the Bipes unit. I understand that will be a limiting factor, but I'm not after huge power, i just want to keep up with some bigger fish on track.

For now, just looking for cheap, simple, reliable power (aren't we all I suppose). This will be a low budget track car with limited street use. :-)

And yes the rx7 is a blast, but set up more for drag or stoplight racing with a 4 spd auto...

Welcome to the site sbcrx007, thanks for joining up!

At the risk of being repetitive . . . :

Bandaids + Track Use =/= Cheap, Simple, Reliable Power

Fair enough, fair enough... and that's after I fry the cheapo clutch, detonate the 1.6 rear diff, and cook the motor on the original cooling system!

In all seriousness, I know its a bandaid set up. I just want to have some fun with it, not get lost in wiring spaghetti.

Trans is coming out this weekend and putting in a heavier clutch
1.8 open rear end is sitting on the floor awaiting installation
weighing my options on coolant reroute...

Time to start a build thread/oh god I'm helplessly lost thread eh?

Honestly.

Buy a PnP version on megasquirt (either used from classifieds or new) and never look back. There really is no "spaghetti" to get lost in, just requires running a few wires for IAT and a vacuum source... easier than installing band-aids.

Welcome! No spaghetti here. MSPnP. Unplug fromOEM ECU, plug in MSPnP. Start tuning.

Fireindc 12-18-2012 07:28 PM

MSPNP is what you need if you plan on tracking this thing. Welcome to the forum!

vitamin j 12-19-2012 11:33 AM

Yeah PNP rules.

Thanks guys, will start looking into it!
