Hello from Louisiana
I'm a 60 year old 2 yr owner of a 2001 Miata with standard package. Previous owner added double bar hard dog, adjustable shocks, Rota Circuit 8 wheels (15"), beefier sway bars. The car has 117,500 miles and runs great. I plan to keep this one for a long time. I am heading toward forced injection (pushed along since the wife just bought a new Mazdaspeed 3.)
I am doing my homework, research, reading, and thinking about my best option toward forced injection. On the list are: clutch replacement, lightweight flywheel, torsen rear end, change in gearing from 4:30 to either 4:10 or 3:90 or 3:63, and improved radiator. Not sure which way to go with gearing in prep for additional power but figure I'll enjoy things better with lower than 4:30. Open to suggestions in that regard. I have an opportunity to purchase a wrecked 2005 Miata Mazdaspeed and am considering that option as an avenue toward replacing my open diff with the MS torsen and possible replacing the entire drive train. My decision will be based on whether the path to better power is more efficient with one of the turbo kits (BEGI or Flyin' Miata) on my engine or by planning to upgrade the MS system. My goal is about 200 at the rear wheels. This car is a daily driver and I'm not going over the top on power but want more performance than stock (and more than the factory MS.) I'll noodle around the forum for answers and look forward to the interaction on the forum. It's hot in Louisiana. :noob: |

With plans for boost, and as a daily driver with 5 speed, I'd go with the 3.9 or 3.63. Do the boost first and worry about the gears later.
There are lots of good (stronger) parts on the MSM, but if you're not worth the work and price if you're shooting for 200hp. What you have will work perfect. |
yep, unless you're getting the whole car for what the rear end is worth, I'd say you're probably better off dealing with your current drivetrain.

I located a torsen out of a 2001 six speed that I'm picking up this week. There's some confusion (from the miata.net site) about whether the gearing is 4.10:1 or 3:90:1 but the way I figure it, with the amount of highway miles I make in my Miata, and with my plans to boost when I can, either one will be more suitable than where I am with the 4.30:1 for what I want. The unit I'm getting is way, way less money than trying to salvage out of the MS that I found. I've decided that my best option is to work with what I've already got in place when I boost.
