Hello miataturbo.net

Hi There

This is my first post as a new member and would like to say hello to everyone.
I have been a car enthusiast for as long as I can remember but only recently became interested when I was offered a mint miata for an absolute steal of a price. When researching to see if would be worth my while i soon discovered the ridiculous potential of these wee beasts and snapped the sellers hand off.

The miata in question is NB 1.8l with a 5 speed manual box. I have BIG plans for it over the coming months including a range of parts to improve the already legendary handling and improve of where the mx-5 falls a little short: POWER!!

The obvious upgrades like coilovers, anti-roll bars, strut braces wheels and tyres will be going on as soon as my financial situation allows, however in terms of power I am still a little torn. I basically have three choices
1- Turbo charger
2- Supercharger, or
3- Throttle bodies

I've have a look in the forums but have been unable to find anything about ppl with throttle bodies installed, is there anyone who could possible give me a little more information about, problems, pros and cons etc?

Thanks

if you want power, you'll pick number 1. acutally the list is perfect as far in ranking order.

Howdy.

Turbo is definitely the way to go for relatively inexpensive horsepower. I suspect at some point I'll build an IRTB Miata, mostly because I'm a sucker for the way they sound. But then I'll regret it, sell off the parts, and go turbo again.

Here's a thread over on (cough*cough) Miata.net that shows actual gains from using an IRTB kit made by Jenvey: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=450998

For approximately $1800 not including install and tuning, the IRTBs netted a gain of 15hp. For the same money, my turbo setup, pieced together patiently over 6 months, will easily net 100+hp over stock.

lol.

cheers guys, I was edging slightly closer to the turbo to be honest
the only reason i suggested throttle bodies is because i would really like this sound in my life lol

I'll check out that info on the blower u suggested "matthewdesigns"

Thanks again

I wonder how much of that 15hp was from simply leaning the Miata out over stock?

I've always wanted a car, that everytime you crack the throttle, the car screams "OMG IM SOOOOO SLOOOWWWWWWWWW!!!! SLOW SLOW SLOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWw. SLOOOOOOOOOW. SLO LSOSLSLSOSEOSESLSOwwwwwwwwww!"

Can't wait to get passed by minivans while my car trolls my ears.

1- Turbo charger
You'll never be *completely* satisfied, but you'll end up glad that you took the path you did, your lack of *complete satisfaction* will only come from knowing how easy it would be to add a few extra horsepower by changing a widget here, or a thingamabob there...

2- Supercharger
You'll be happy for a few months, but the day you get to drive a friend's turbo miata, you'll immediately become sad. You'll debate in your head for months how much you really wish you would have spent that money on a turbocharger instead of a supercharger, and in your mind you'll soon be trying to figure out how much money you can get out of your supercharger to start piecing together your turbo install. You'll always be hampered down by the fact that you bought the supercharger first, and that you'll have to shell out about as much money as you did for the supercharger to get a decent start on the turbocharger. It will be difficult to justify to yourself throwing that much money into it again for a net gain of 30-50 horsepower over supercharged, but you'll have hit a brick wall with the supercharger as far as adding power to compete with your buddy.

3- Throttle bodies
You'll be excited, you'll install them, they'll look pretty, they'll sound cool, you'll be at a stoplight, it will turn green, the minivan in the next lane will pull on you like a mofo once you hit second gear, you'll get pissed that you wasted so much money on noise-makers instead of power adders, you'll then get on the freeway, accelerate to triple digit speeds, and turn the car into the first bridge support you come across. Don't kill yourself on a bridge support, get direcT.... get a turbocharger.
