Talking 04 MSM #1465 Reporting in!

Hello!

I'm Mike.

I've owned my 04' MSM for almost 2 years and I'm at a point where I decided to finally register on this site to reply & ask questions rather than stalk all of you...

THE CAR
04 MSM, no motor mods (yet)
Begi Stg 3 Kit, cast iron mani, gt2860rs @ 6psi (currently), corksport 3" catback. Oil leaks n ery thang!

I have a interesting vehicle on my hands... oil leaks to electrical problems (speedo, radio/speakers), Vehicle dies if I hit a puddle (right side somewhere)

Currently sorting some finances but, realistic end goals are 300~ish hp after my build. Vehicle will see light track later but in the mean time it'll be a DD & Street/highway vehicle to use on trips through the texas hill country

I have a cat.

Sounds like step 1 is a MBC and turn the boost up to 10. Should be more than fine on your build.

Also, may want to get that electrical problem checked...
Welcome!

Ditch the shitty 4.1 rear gear...3.9 or 3.63 will be your friend.
Ditch the shitty MSM-specific steering rack for ANY 99-05 non-MSM rack...and you'll be able to make real u-turns.
Ditch the stock suspension and get something worth a ****.

Other than those issues, MSMs are pretty fun cars. Welcome.

3.63 Is on my to-do list
Never heard of the MSM steering rack being different, will research
I think it has suspension, but it'll be torn out soon enough regardless!

I've been on the hunt seeing about how I can go about running a new ecu.

3 favs I have are AEM, Megasquirt, Haltech. My BIG question is how do these ecu's handle state inspection etc. so I can 'legally' still be on the road. With the Xede its piggy back as you guys know. Beyond that I have yet to find out. Unless I'm swapping the stock ecu back in come inspection time.

They don't handle state inspection. Your able to pass with the xede? I thought that threw cels.

The only way around emissions is swapping back to stock beforehand or like me, register your car in a state/county that doesn't have emissions.

Yea, the xede does throw codes but it's related to how it's wired on the MSM using the stock boost solenoid, when you switch it to "Xede's boost control" the stock ecu throws the code thinking that the solenoid has been disconnected. Swap the wires, reset codes & drive for a little, Pass Inspection, go home and swap back.

I need to fix my wiring too, been lazy and left it with tape so code now 24/7. In my map I have the solenoid perm shut cause I'm using wastegate anyways.

I can confirm this lol. Between my 02 and my friends 05 MSM, her car has several more feet of turning radius. It seems Mazda may have done this to avoid and potential wheel scrub with the 17"s at full-lock.

Double confirmation here. I can easily U-turn on my street with my 01. I have to do a 3 point with my old 04 MSM.

As an avid lover of the 12:1 MSM rack, I say keep it if you want more movement. The MSM rack wins in feel and sharpness every time on an autocross. You guys seem to not know how to fix u turns. I'm not a drifter, but I will happily use a **light** clutch kick to shorten the wheelbase of the car and slip in without a problem.

Since these photos I've acquired this

The blue one in the photo is now a paper weight at my job, greddy knock off guessing?

It used a rubber o-ring to 'seal' the maaaad boost but the o-ring was twisted on the inside. Never sealed and had bad idle issues till a new one was purchased.

Picked up the car in Dallas, shady dealership. Fat guy showed me how he can seat the car into the road with his fat *** and give me a speed run... More surprised it made it back to Austin!.

Apparently the head was warped & resurfaced and rebuilt.

I think the original seals were used cause it was leaking oil everywhere when I got it. It's been 're-sealed' since, new pcv valve from FM (this helped tons), Turbo has been 'serviced' by a local shop but I question their work

I still have oil leaks, guessing turbo/pistons/valve seals but funds are tight atm.

Its my current DD to work & back, hail storms strike a nerve the paint is amazing, interior is clean. 83k miles currently. Previously was garaged but was abused from auto-x and heat.

Needed to clean the begi catch can, also cleaned the airflow sensor. Oil everywhere in the intake, :/ And my turbine does not exactly spin freely...

It makes a grindy metal on metal noise similar to sand. Guessing it's toast?
