Hello from NC

Hello All,

Just joined so complete noob. Am enjoying reading through forums. Lots of wonderful ideas so my head is reeling a little.

About me: 55+ bloke, electrical/electronics engineer, with more of a bent towards wrenching in my spare time vs tinkering with the electronics in a car. Get enough of that at work!

I have a 96 M-edition miata that has been repurposed as a track day car while remaining street legal. My county has emissions checks so OBDII port must remain intact. I drive to track days (Yay VIR!) and that is a hard limit for me. Its 'arrive and drive' or nothing. No messing with trailers. I hope one day to add FI, but still looking for a good emissions compliant solution. Am a little leery of 'powercards' and other piggyback solutions. Just seems a little too band-aid-y for me. Feel free to convince me otherwise though. Am always open to any kind of ideas/suggestions/updates.

Cheers y'all!

Welcome to The Forum. There's lots of track guys here.

You are right, powercards are not a good idea. I haven't done anything emissions compliant but I believe a megasquirt might work well for you in a piggyback situation controlling a secondary set of injectors and ignition timing. Or you can do the emissions test swap trick.

Welcome! What county are you in? Do you ever venture to the mountains for some canyon carving? There is a strong contingency of us Miata folks in the NC/SC/TN area that do plenty of touge style stuff from April through November.

Are there a good bit of NC/SC folks? I am (very) new to the Miata lifestyle. I'm definitely looking to get more involved and get to know other owners in the relative area. I dont do any of the fun racing or track stuff since the car is my daily, but it's still fun to learn and get to know people

Hi sixshooter. That is what I am looking at now. MS and swap it out at the track. Just puts a few too many constraints around the problem if I ever go FI. I guess that is the problem I am trying to understand. Running MS and FI would be great but will have to return to stock ECU when 'street driving'. I could lock open a waste-gate to prevent boost but need to be able to run larger injectors in an effective NA mode with stock ECU. Probably makes for an unhappy motor if injectors are much over 300cc, which in turn leads to limited power with FI.

Alternatively run in piggyback mode to handle injection and timing, but still poor results compared to standalone. Or so I am lead to believe.

Anyone running MS in piggyback mode want to give me some pointers?

Wake county. Love the mountain roads but not over there often enough to enjoy them. Will do tail-of-dragon one day....on my bucket list!

Yes, tons. Several of the guys who run with us use their cars as daily drivers. The largest gathering of the year is Miatas at the Gap the first weekend of August.

Yeah you're a couple hours away from the good stuff but it's worth the trip. MATG is going to be a hike but it's worth going at least one time.

That's really awesome. I'm interested in going to Miatas at the Gap. It's about a 5-6 hour drive for me, but i'm sure i'm gonna struggle to find lodging if i wait any longer to look haha

If you can't find anything at Fontana Resort then you can possibly find someone here to let you crash on their cabin floor or rent a room to you. We usually end up with a lot of people in each cabin splitting the cost.

Noob also from NC...

Hi Kiwi, fellow NC Noob here! I believe you are the guy who sold me the hood this past weekend, correct? If so, a big thanks! It's going to look much better than my current busted up one! :)
