Hello, new on the forum, S/C issues
Hello folks,
I've been on the forum maybe 2 times in the past year or so and this time signed up. Spend most of my time in the LA area. Sorry for coming on with an issue on my Miata right away but it has been in the shop a lot lately and I am having serious withdrawal symptoms. My 2000 Miata has 180K miles on it, and the Jackson Racing M45 S/C on it which i bought used has about 80K to 90K miles on it. Had a Hydra Nemesis installed on it a week ago. Last week when i start up the car in the morning there is a chirping sound which to me sounded like a belt starting to wear out but the guys at the shop have tightened all they can and think it may be the S/C wearing out. Does anybody here know what the symptoms are of a JR S/C that is about to go (before the metal on metal crunching sound)? I'd hate to send it out for a rebuild if it is another problem. Looking forward to learning a lot on this forum. Thanks! |
I don't know much about superchargers but I know they eat belts like a fat kid eats cake.

Welcome to the site MPuff, thanks for joining up!

Maybe they over tightened the belt? It's happened to my s14 back in the day...

Looking forward to learning a lot on this forum. Thanks! I'm not saying the sound IS your SC for sure, but they do tend to fail. Both of mine failed with less than 100k miles on them. (i was also running a 21% reduction pulley) The bearings and drive gears fail a lot. Were you changing the oil in it, or did you believe them when they said it was a sealed unit, and didn't need to be maintainenced??? |
The crunchy sound is what you will hear at the very end of the fail-ification process..
Before that, the gears and bearings may whine... It will probably sound like someone whose waterpump is going out. That loud annoying vaccum cleaner sound |
Thanks all, for the thoughts and suggestions.....i think i am going to have it rebuilt....might be the bearings that need replacing. On fat boy eating cake, lol, only had one belt replaced so far. I hung on to the old one for a while don't know why i was thinking maybe i could use it as shoe laces.
