Default Hello from Maryland!

Hey guys, I found this site while perusing for another Miata. What a goldmine! Your For Sale forum netted me a good possible already.

A little about myself:

I used to autox with a 2002 Focus equipped with a Jackson Racing Supercharger and Snow Performance water/methanol injection. The car made 230whp/180wtq and also had a host of other part (SVT brakes, H&R cup kit suspension, and lots of European bits around the exterior). I was an avid member of Focaljet.com and the car was pretty well known on there as being the first JRSC ZX3 (non-SVT) to break 200whp and run sub-14's in the 1/4... a big feat considering I did my 13.98 on Falken Azenis and the car was not setup for drag racing. I got rid of the car in my first fit of lunacy when I bought my 2005 Ford Ranger.

After that I bought a '91 Miata and raced it for a while in stock class. It was great fun, but I found myself in a very small apartment complex that had limited parking. Another fit of lunacy later and I was back to one vehicle.

Flash forward to today and I now have a home and plenty of parking and as of Wednesday I will hopefully be the owner of a '92 Miata. I look forward to getting back on the track and I'm glad I found this forum as a resource. I've been spending a good deal of today looking around and there's a lot of very useful information to be found here! A few engineer/car nuts at work are already drooling at the idea that we'll have a fresh canvas to play with.

I intend to drive the hell out of this car and enjoy every minute of it. I can't quite justify buying my dream car, the Lotus Exige, but this will be a lightweight, RWD, boosted car. Haven't decided whether or not to go turbo or sc yet (probably blasphemy on a site called "miataturbo") but either way it will be quick and fun.

Regards

Nate

Check out the Meet and Greet section. We are having a Dyno day up at York Automotive in MD and if you want to see some different setups feel free to come out.

Unfortunately I have drill (Nat'l Guard) this weekend so I won't be able to make that meet, but have no doubt I will be keeping my eye out for the future. I'm going to take this project a step at a time and will be focusing on suspension, brakes, and tires before moving on to power. I don't expect to have any extra psi's until this summer so I have plenty of time to research.

Thanks for the welcome guys. My post count might not show it, but this isn't my first time at the boost rodeo so no worries about me asking about eBay "turbos" and headlight fluid.

As for the turbo vs super... that's debatable to no end, but I have a feeling words like downpipe and wastegate will be in my vocabulary for this project.

They will be replaced with stuff like horsepower and torque. Both of which tend to be difficult for the supercharger to produce a lot of, especially in a small engine.

Not to mention a lack of throttle response or too much lag are symptoms of dyno queens and poorly setup turbo kits.

The other newbs have been a bit of a PITA lately. You win at everything forever sir!

On a side note, give some serious thought to the ebay turbos that you so readily dismiss. I've been made into a believer.

Welcome to the site.

Fact: Living life on the edge by running a chinacharger at high boost levels on a high mileage stock engine swells your e-peen.

Welcome to the site.
Sorry, small confusion on the "eBay turbo" comment. I was referring to those super-sweet $25 electric turbochargers that appear eerily similar to a leaf blower motor.

I have seen some no-names from our sweatshop friends that have actually worked quite well.

One with a slightly dinged up passenger fender and Ford Mineral Grey paint? That'd be the one in question, yes.

I'm hoping to finalize the deal this Wednesday and have it home by next weekend. If I wasn't stuck doing weapons maintenance all weekend I'd have already been to the bank and en route southbound.

If by ford mineral grey paint you mean metallic brownish then yes. Every bolt on it should be nice and easy to get off to swap on nice new turbo stuff.

First it was like:

Haven't decided whether or not to go turbo or sc yet
Then it was like this:

Turbo > Stupidcharged
Then this happened:

I have a feeling words like downpipe and wastegate will be in my vocabulary for this project.
And then:

but what about throttle response and lag
Which lead to this:

They will be replaced with stuff like horsepower and torque.
And the world was right again.

Welcome! You will do fine here.
