Hello from Sacramento

2 Attachment(s)
Picked up this 1990 last weekend for $650 it supposedly only needs a head gasket and I'm planning on tearing into it this weekend to see how bad it really is.

So far i'm just here to read and research.

Inspect the crank pulley for wobble on those '90's. Search for the symptoms and fixes on this forum.

Welcome to the forum.

hello and welcome

Good luck! If it's worse than expected, you can probably source a new motor, i.e. an 'upgrade' to the 1.8L.

Sup.

Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the tip, I had found some info on that already so it's already on my list of things to do.

That was my thought process too.

 we can start a Miata section at the sac Subaru meats

Welp I figured I'd bring this back up. Turned out the 1.6 needed more than a headgasket and I wound up sourcing a 1.8 and picked up a FM swap kit. I am in need of a decent 1.8 intake tube and still need to get the O2 sensor bung welded into the exhaust manifold.

18psi 10-22-2013 01:48 AM

swapping to 1.8 is ALWAYS a good idea. no matter the circumstances

Chris GTO TT 10-23-2013 12:29 AM

Agreed as long as I can get it registered and drive it I'll be happy.

Chris GTO TT 11-03-2013 04:30 PM

Discovering the 1.8 swap intake setup is a giant cluster f***. Apparently no one really tells you that when you are shopping for parts.... At this point I'm really just wishing I'd found a decent running 1.6 so I could at least drive it. Bought it in Feb and still haven't gotten to drive it :(

sixshooter 11-03-2013 06:55 PM

I understand there is a throttle body arrangement change, but I don't know about anything else. But I've never been there or done that.

mc85 11-04-2013 10:46 AM

Any details on the trouble you are having? Like one connections/parts/etc. are not working out?

You might be able to get some quick answers/tricks if you throw out some questions.

Chris GTO TT 11-11-2013 02:55 PM

Basically the intake cross over tube and the fans want to inhabit the same location, we wound up taking the resonator bottle out and then cut the fan shrouds to allow room for the intake. It all works and after I got the fuel plumbed the correct way it fires right up. It does seem to chase the idle right after starting up and needs a little throttle to keep it running when it's cold and just started up. I think the idle control is bad.

mc85 11-11-2013 04:21 PM

Nice!

Idle is a PITA... Throttle plate adjustment screw?

18psi 11-11-2013 06:26 PM

no. dont mess with the idle screw at all. if its fluctuating the valve is probably bad or you have a vacuum leak.

mc85 11-11-2013 07:08 PM

It'll act like a vac leak if it's open too far. An easy thing to check prior to going after the ISCV or vac leaks.

sixshooter 11-11-2013 07:48 PM

Or you just need to adjust your idle fuel and spark cells to cause it to settle into a smooth idle.

18psi 11-11-2013 07:58 PM

pretty sure he's on stock ecu

Idle is set using standard 1.6 ECU methods... ground the TEN pin and set idle to 850rpm or so. Idle is rock sold except for cold start, requires throttle to be held open. Also when I hot start it the idle will hunt for a couple of seconds and then settle down.

Yeah have to keep it as stock looking as possible for SMOG in CA...still worried about passing visual :sad2:

18psi 11-12-2013 02:28 PM

Its really not as bad as you think. Well, at least it hasn't been for me all these years.

I actually just passed on mine yesterday: while my car was basically completely back to stock here's what the guy really looked at closely on visual:

-egr
-evap lines and charcoal cannister
-hotside of the egr
-looked underneath to make sure cat is in place

That's it.

And I'm fairly certain he didn't really know what he was looking at, or how it should look, just making sure there aren't disconnected lines or wires, stuff like that.
Since yours is a 91 it doesn't even have an egr iirc. And unless you go to some ultra crazy place that will check your bay vs a picture of what it should look like (I've never even seen one of those places, but heard some horror stories) I think you'll be fine.

You're not even obd2 dude. You'll be fine :)

Chris GTO TT 11-19-2013 06:33 PM

Got it smogged... First place wouldn't touch it, but the 2nd didn't blink. I also had some cheap tires thrown on it all that's left is brakes and the top replacement. Then the fun can start :)

turbofan 11-19-2013 06:46 PM

Nice find.

So... GTO TT eh? I have a GTO...

Chris GTO TT 11-19-2013 08:11 PM

Well I had a 3000GT which was sold in Japan as a GTO, and I've just kept using the username.

Hi everyone! So I am new to Sacramento, I just moved up here from orange county and was looking for meets around the south sac area. I was only told about one off of Mack Rd and Franklin, there was a descent amount of people and cars. I got a drink and saw a vape shop. I'm in to vapeing so I walked in and was talking to the owner's. They actually want to start a meet in front of there shop every Saturday. I guess they are also car guys. They said that they will start it at 7:30pm if anyone was interested. It would be cool to meet up with miata people out here and make new friends.

Start your own intro thread you hipster you.... lol

likeaglove 12-15-2013 10:52 PM

LOL I know right? So many hipsters are in to it in OC. I'm not that dedicated to it but it's nice. Are there any other meets in Sac???

Chris GTO TT 12-30-2013 09:51 PM

I know about the SAMOA stuff, but I personally haven't been. I need to get out to one and talk to some people now that my car is running.
