Hello from SW Florida

I am wanting to start piecing together a turbo setup that I've been looking forward to for a longgg time now, so I figured it's time I venture away from CR for awhile!

The car is a 91 and has been passed around in my family since my great-uncle purchased it new in 1990 with hardtop. It was an automatic until a few months after I got it, I put a 5 speed out of a 97.

I just hit 150k miles yesterday on the original motor. It burns a little oil but otherwise seems fine. I have a Torsen2 diff from a 2001 with 75k~ miles of use. Momo Start seat, Momo 320mm wheel, and NRG QR. R-Package front/rear lips (not shown in picture) and cheap coilovers and cheap wheels.

Also, I'm in photography and making videos. If you're bored check out my Youtube and other links in my sig!

I think I would be fine in the 200's but I have a desire to go for as much as possible out of the 1.6, built of course. I have never been in a turbo Miata so i'm not totally sure of how they feel in various power ranges. I would imagine the upper 150+ would make for quicker acceleration than the majority of road cars.

I have been a bit spoiled by some of my friends' cars. Cars like a 610whp turbo Civic, 350whp NA-T MK4 Supra, about to be single'd R33 GTR, 98 240sx 2JZGTE 680whp+, Audi R8, 09 GTR, 500whp TT 350z, etc.

I know the Miata won't compete much with them but I like the car for more than just that. It was the first car or thing I ever drove when I was 11 lol! I like drifting but I don't really want to do it much with my car. I would like to do a couple amateur track days at places like Sebring and PBIR here in Florida. I don't really find auto-x appealing. Other than that I would just like to have a fun street car, and something to tinker with on weekends.

SO FAR I was thinking of building a setup using my old T28 from my 240sx's 98 SR20DET, or even a GT2871r that I was going to upgrade the car to.. I'm here to do research and figure out what will work best for what I want though.

I haven't taken any recent pics since the lips, seat, steering wheel, etc. These are from various points last year:

Welcome to the site. Are you in Sarasota? Some of those "friends cars" sound like the SRQ crew that have made it down to Fort Myers a few times.

Thanks! Yea when I was editing it I started to get a headache lol. If you're into photography, I used a friends' Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM on my Canon Rebel T2i.

Yup.

^^ Yea guys I live a little south of Sarasota but I'm finishing my B.S. in Computer Science this semester in Fort Myers at FGCU. The last 3 pics I posted were at BMP and Desoto. Oh just realized it's you Tim, thanks for the welcome. Can I has a ride in your car sometime?

buffon01 01-25-2012 11:30 AM

Very clean. Now, it replaces rimz for 6uls or else it gets the hose.

Welcome.

Lol thankssssss. The wheel of choice around here eh? I think they are great wheels for the light weight factor, however I'm not too big of a fan of how they look. I'm going for Volk TE37v or Work Equip 01 in 15x8, higher offset than I currently have, less camber, and more tire! I'm going to run flares and cut out the crappy fender pull job I did.

buffon01 01-25-2012 12:32 PM

Well 6uls for the sake of Function > Form argument.

Yea I agree there for sure, and hell even Rota's are better than what I currently have in that regard. Also, I definitely like the 6UL cost over the Work or Volk wheels I want.

Ok great! Do you go to the Tuesday meets regularly? I've been thinking about going to one sometime.

Oh lol small world. What department do you work in if you don't mind? I haven't notice your car in your sig on campus before. I like your color scheme and wheels! Nice #'s and drivetrain mods too!

pdexta 01-26-2012 11:04 AM

I do accounting for dining services. It's usually parked in the garage behind the student union. I don't think I've seen your car either, not too many miatas on campus. Thanks for the compliments, don't steal my wheels :)

I'll try not to steal them lol. I haven't parked over on that side of campus in years so that's no surprise. How often do you go to the meet down here? I don't even know where it is anymore, haven't been in over a year.

I still go pretty much every week, we've moved it to Ale House on cattleman/bee ridge and most people get there at 8:30ish.

Sokool 01-26-2012 06:08 PM

Hi Kyle,

Nice to see you made it to the right place. If I ever get my car back on the road before you pull the trigger Ill take you for a ride. You should feel right at home in another white '91. LOL

In case you haven't figured it out yet I'm the other Kyle that has a white Miata. You have no idea how many people say, "Hey I saw a car like yours with chrome rims!"

I go out on most Wednesday and Saturdays. We've been meeting at Starbucks on Daniels by 41 if you want to come out sometime.

Ok I know right where that is ... hopefully it's easier to get into that parking lot than it is at Buffalo Wild Wings lol. I'll try to make it up there sometime!

Hey man, I met you awhile back at one of the University Pkwy meets I think. I thought you had bronze wheels? IIRC you were running a turbo setup on the original 1.6 right? I do remember you had fresh paint, bolt in cage, steering wheel, seat, harness, etc. I think I went to that meet shortly after I swapped my auto trans out but was otherwise completely stock, with my crappy original paint .

If someone had mistook my car for yours, I would tell them that they must be thinking of a much cleaner, and nicer one up north of me! lol

***Actually I misread your post, I'm glad to know when people see my car they can't easily tell how bad of shape my paint (and fenders) are in, especially compared to yours.

Ok awesome, it's funny cause isn't there two Starbucks in that plaza? I assume you mean the one by Moes. Around what time is it usually on Wednesdays? I definitely want to come by one week.

Yep that's me. Car has changed a bunch since you last saw it. It has new wheels and the bolt in cage has been sold for one. Actually as it sits now it's hardly recognizable, or drivable. I'm making it a street legal full time race car. It will see a meet here or there but it won't see the road much unless it's on its way to a track or my Mazdaspeed6 blows up. :giggle:

But a 200 whp Miata is plenty for a street driven car. My current setup is around 230 whp on the stock engine, with just a modified GReddy kit. You should totally come to the next Tuesday meet and talk shop.

Yeah, I think you're right. The meet is at the one by Moes. People usually start showing up around 9, and it starts getting busier by 10 or so.

Oh ok awesome. I will try to make it out next Tuesday. I think 200~ would be fine and definitely within my budget.
