HEY ALL! miata turbo newbie cant wait to get started!

hey everyone... have not picked up my miata yet but still on the prowl for a deal.. mostly trying to find one thats not modded allready so i can start fresh. I'm looking for another project to add to my large list of things im already doing... I mostly work on motorcycles and build custom bikes, but.... most of my friends don't have bikes. =/ SO! this brings me here. im planning on doing a simple cheap ebay turbo build iv seen a surprising amount of success on here with them.

can anyone recommend a particular one?
and anything else you would suggest would be great!

also a little about myself, i live in Long Island New York. Im a iron worker(welder) I work on prefabrication of buildings. ie: the steel skeletons of most large structures. So if anyone has a welding question hit me up im more then happy to lead you in the right direction!

FRT_Fun 07-15-2014 07:50 PM

If you are seriously considering an ebay kit than yes you are.

kingwolf 07-15-2014 08:03 PM

then why are a good amount ofppl on here running majority of parts from them? iv read a shit ton about them on here. ur attitude isnt appreciated. You could just give a recommendation and some insite as to your reasoning.

Como se what!? Slap yourself. Vigorously.
Reveal true identity/ or:
Go to the build threads and read all sticky posts.
Slap yourself again with authority.

If you have to ask questions like which will work and which is best, You have not done enough reading.

It is Extremely covered here on the forum. Honestly you need to just wait for a good used kit for your engine to go up on sale and spend around the same and get "mostly" A complete kit and not have to fab up 2/3rds of this "Kit" from ebay.

Also the used kits will prolly last a lot longer, and make more power, and not break/crack/explode into a fireball of doom.

Just because you can fab... Doesnt mean you should. Let someone else do the hard work, and you just install/enjoy the car being semi-reliable if you get a stand alone... (MS 2/3)

Be very cautious about asking this question (don't do it).
If you are a professional welder, you have the skills to do this the "cheap" way as long as you also have patience.
Don't plan your turbo setup around the turbo. This sounds counter-intuitive, but it is true. Find a car first (hint: 94 and up). Since you live in New York, I would highly suggest doing a fly and drive to the south or NorthWest because rust.
Once you do that, then set some power/ drive time/ reliability goals for yourself and go from there.

see now thats a helpful post! thank you... yes i completely agree, iv been keeping my eye out on mostly compete used (good!) kits. i know which certain parts need to be quality and which kindaaa don't matter so much, ie, quality turbo, exhaust manifold, but when it comes to intercooler piping and things like that ebay is ok. i also dont mind fabing anything since i do have all the tools at my disposal. so if something did break... id rebuild from scratch. my idea was to just get a basic ebay kit and upgrade from there... sell the ebay turbo then upgrade to a brand name..... those kinds of steps. also being that this is my first turbo build i also need to learn to tune. so if i can tune some kit off of ebay then ill upgrade to parts where i can really start putting some more stress on them and not have to worry about the quality.

my questions on which will work best.. i guess were more of hey what are your opinions whats your experience.... but yes there is a lot more reading to do.

kingwolf 07-15-2014 08:27 PM

hey thanks Monk good info. yeah rust can be a problem here but im not worried about that so much. (ill just fix it and get the price lower =D)

you still missed the point. The only thing worth a half a damn is possibly the intercooler and MAYBE the couplers/piping.

The REST of the kit is garbage. The exhaust manifold Cracks/breaks, The turbo you almost cant sell them to anyone... the oil lines I wouldnt trust, same with water (if the kit includees those things) same with a prolly absolute shit down pipe.

You need to get a MS 3 Basic kit from Reverent. They come with a BASE tune which would allow you to start the car and baby it over to a shop to have it tuned.

You need to just hold your horses and get a used kit. DOnt buy Ebay kits. Its counter productive, even if your 949Racing or some other shop like Track Dog Racing.

There is already a lot of R&D in the turbo kits from good shops. Spend the extra coin, Fab up other shit.

Monk 07-15-2014 08:31 PM

Which one, the one in which I told you to slap yourself?
You are correct about inter cooler stuff, but otherwise you need to replace ebay with BEGI. At least for a kit that is comparable price-wise to anything ebay. It will come with its own frustrations, but they will be fewer and less severe.

kingwolf 07-15-2014 08:32 PM

ic ic then a lot of the ebay shit im reading is crap.... iv seen like 50/50 good and bad, this is what i needed to hear... BADDDDD thanks all

No you won't. Ask me how I know.
The time and effort is worth the money saved, believe me.
Besides, cars in the areas I mentioned have been shielded somewhat from the ridiculously inflated prices you will find in NY.

Erat 07-15-2014 08:39 PM

Lets just make things clear right here right now.

Some ebay stuff is great. In fact, people run ebay turbos without any issues at all. IC piping, and other assorted odds and ends are fine to buy from ebay.

But we all know a greater investment in the short term results in less expense in the long term. So maybe instead you should think about buying a barebones FM or BEGi kit instead? That way you know things will fit properly and you won't need to asshole rig anything together using miscellaneous ebay junk. (last thing you want is to be enjoying your peppy little car in the middle of summer and have am ebay coolant line to the turbo bust causing the car to overheat and warp the head) All because you somehow managed to miss every single god damn thread on this site talking about ebay parts.

Perhaps you should not ask questions and maybe wait to get started. Doing things overnight and without the proper thought will only lead to failure.

kingwolf 07-15-2014 08:42 PM

of course... i dont even have the car yet.. thats why im reading and asking now to get it all out of the way.

Erat 07-15-2014 08:45 PM

And we haven't even gotten into engine management.

kingwolf 07-15-2014 08:46 PM
