Default Hello From Charlotte NC

well i bought my first miata saturday it is a 1990 got a good price on it.

anyways this is the first project car i have had had plenty of crotch rockets. use to own a motorcycle parts apparel and repair store. but ya.. this is going to be a fun little project..

in the mean time im going to ask all the noob questions i can think of right now as for i feel it would be totally appropriate to put it all up front here as for with cars i know the basics but thats about that. on bikes ask me any question you want and i probably know it.

so...

i see the Turbo Specialties kits are CRAP
the Greddy i read something about it cracking? although cutting slots into it helps its life some.

i know BEGi (sp?) and fastmiatas have like the two most recommended setups.

but my question is what is a good entry level system?

i guess it would be better for me to say what i want to do.

I WANT to have the most but the Safest amount of HP without changing pistons and crankshafts and cams on the engine. im thinking 200? 240?

i don't know what is the SAFETY net though?

next would be

im looking at the
Dual Tip Muffler by Racing Beat

will this be ok to use with a turbo?

also what catalytic converter should one use?

also looking at
Power Pulse Header by Racing Beat

can i use this with a turbo down the road?

as you can see i am thinking i can do exhaust system first then turbo? can i or no?

would doing a cold air intake before a turbo be a stupid waste of money?

if i was to piece together a turbo system what is recommended?
what parts do i need for a basic turbo system

i know an intercooler is not needed but suggested and worth while having but it will be a upgrade for later i am thinking.

thanks a lot for letting me get my noobness out... can't help i don't know about cars

Header with a turbo? not going to happen...I am guessing you meant the power pulse muffler.

Your power goal is about right but I would worry about what crank you have. 89 and early 90 1.6's have a problem with the crank nose cracking.

For exhaust, wait till you install the turbo system then worry about exhaust. Free-flowing exhaust for a turbo system on a N/A car will be quite loud.

No cat here. I didn't like my feet getting toasty, but wouldn't really mind it now that it's cold again.

And back to the normal MT.net talk....

You mean Flyin' Miata, not "fastmiatas".

What's your budget?

One of the popular entry-level kits is BEGI's "S" kit:
BEGI-S Miata Turbo System 1989-1993 BEGi

Or the less expensive "Chinacharger" version:
BEGI Shanghai-S Turbo System 1990-1993 BEGi

budget is about 3,500 for the turbo set-up i am asking so i can start looking at what i need as i am not going to rob my bank right now. need to fix up everything else first as for i would rather the car be in good shape before investing in speed.

and sorry i did not know about no header with a turbo. like i said im new to the car scene. please excuse me.

thank you evank and DXO

How about looking around at some of the stickies and build threads from other people to get a good general idea of what you need to do. Some things are more involved than others and can take time plan out. If you are asking a question 95% of the time it has been asked before and will continue to be asked for as long as people strap small(or big) spinney things to their engines.

you know instead of you all beating your heads against a keyboard i think making a single sticky post to the tune of the turbo for a beginner with all the information one would need. everyone starts somewhere i have NO FRICKEN CLUE as to what a turbo costs im guessing 4 grand. i know a nice set up on a bike runs you about 2500-3500 so i am adding a little to it as for a bikes set up is a lot less complex then a cars.

Not trying to come off harsh, you don't want to catch the tail end of some other members posts. Now they can be harsh...

You can buy a kit or piece one together. Your choice. If you put it together yourself you can come out cheaper sometimes. My setup is about what you would be looking for.

Turbo: 300
intercooler:80
piping:100
manifold+dp:160
full exhaust:140
injectors+fuel rail:90
MS:300
clutch:300
other random bits and **** ive broken:800+
Total:2000-2600

Most of my parts are Ebay parts that are remade to last longer than 2 days. Its not the best but it works.

See thats all i was asking for DXO thank you. members should realize there self centerness and lack of caring just scares potentially great minds away. i grew up as a motorcycle mechanic and racer my dad use to race i pretty much hung those keys up and taking up a new hobby now. baby steps though trying to learn a little bit about EVERYTHING its rather hard to take in all at once.

I haven't read more than your subject line and the year of your car.

Seeing how you are in charlotte, go get one of those roush windsor based cup crate engines and throw it in there. Done.

Ok i read some finally. I love this forum because I think most members are pretty damn funny, and the knowledge base is incredible. You came to the right place to get info.

But you have to not take ANYTHING anyone says personally. If you show you can take some remarks like "search the stickes newb" or whatnot and not get even slightly upset like the above quoted post, then you'll get some respect. I don't think anyone here was harsh to you. In fact I'm very surprised no one has bothered with this thread yet. We all must be busy I guess.

In other words, "we" are not concerned whatsoever about scaring away potential great minds. That's actually kinda funny. Great minds are a dime a dozen.

My only advice with your "baby steps though trying to learn a little bit about EVERYTHING its rather hard to take in all at once" is to take a few weeks, perhaps a couple hours or so, and read through some stickies. If you see anyone who looks like they may have a slick setup, search their screenname for their build. You can also visit Flyin Miata's or BEGI's website, there's some good info there too but remember they are trying to sell you their kit.
