Default New driver noob from md

Hi guys, I'm Hunter from Ocean city, Md. I'm just getting my liscense and looking at miatas. I'd like to get a NA from around 94-97. I think I'll get a turbo since my friends all have mustangs and camaros. I'm looking at the FM voodoo 1 kit. My friends dad is a mechanic who can help me with the install. What do you think? Yes or No?

What are your goals for the turbo install? Keep up with your friends in a drag race? Match their HP (likely not going to happen with a voodoo kit)?

Definitely not trying to match their hp, but at least surprise them at the drag strip, make them get rid of the "girl car" idea. I don't want too much power that I can't control, so thinking of going with the proven, conservative voodoo turbo.

I would say nay to turbo. You just started driving. Upgrade a few of the suspension pieces and start doing some autocross. You will spend a lot less money, and have fun. Plus you will spank your friends mustangs in any autocross.

Ok thanks
What seems to be a good common suspension setup?

There are loads of upgrades. Your best bet is to go to the build thread section, and browse through some of the threads there. You can get an idea of what everyone is using.

While doing the suspension upgrades you can start prepping your car for a turbo (since eventually you must get one). Check compression. Timing belt if it hasn't been done. Water pump while you are in there.

The voodoo kit is pretty nice. I had the FM kit and it's extremely well put together. If you really want to go turbo the easy route do that.

Most people on here will recommend you at least get the no electronics kit, and buy a megasquirt and tune everything with that. But it takes a lot of work and effort. Definitely not plug and play.

Check out miata.net in the suspension section for various setup reviews. You might like the kits offered from flyin miata. I am very happy with my suspension choice as outline in my sig. This is all assuming the miata you pick up needs suspension upgrades.

I also second the opinion to forget the turbo for now and go autocrossing. You will drive circles around your friends. Make sure the rest of the car is in top shape...you will learn lots and have fun along the way.

Ah yea I had the Illumina as well, loved them. Such a great ride. Although I hear the VMaxx is pretty nice as well.

I chose them over the vmaxx mostly because of the warranty but also that I felt I would end up at about the FM spring design hieght anyway. I figured I could upgrade to the GC coilovers later on if that's what I need to do down the road for counterweighting. I think the spring rates are perfect for me, so I don't really miss the stiffer vmaxx rates.
