Hi! Finally going turbo!
 

Hi! My name is Sam officially but most people call me Skip. I’ve been on this site for a while now but haven’t taken the time to write up an intro. I’ve been racing anything I can for a few years now including a couple of Nissan's a Chevy and a couple Miata's at our local Auto X and a couple of track days. I just started a new Miata project and decided to do my first turbo set up. I will be using my old XPX Miata for this project as I already know the car very well, and it is a lot closer to where I want the car set up than any of my other Miata’s. The car so far has been completely stripped, has a set of AGX adjustable with Sport springs, a crappy ebay steering wheel and the 15” rims that came on it when I bought it 4 years ago. It is a 1990 and I have no idea if it has any special package or anything but it was very well taken care of when I took ownership.

I have been working on or around cars for about 15 years and have limited fabrication skills but all the tools I believe I will need for this project… This will be a learning process for sure, but I am ready for a new challenge. I just picked up a major sponsor with LP3 Technologies inc. and a sup sponsor with San Diego Auto Fab. LP3 will be funding this for the most part and SD Auto fab will be doing most of the fab work. I’ll be starting a build thread here soon to track my progress and ask questions as I learn.

Our goal is a sub 2K LB race weight and around 230Hp. Our plan is to continue putting the car on a diet with lighter weight parts and some better (or creative) use of what’s already on the car. We have chosen to swap in a 1.8 ad have selected the Voodoo II kit from FM as a place to start.

Thanks for taking a look and I hope to meet a bunch of you guys at any of the local meets and Auto cross. Take a look at my build thread (as soon as I create it) for any pictures as the build progresses.

Voodoo 2 kit is a great place to start as far as a mechanical setup goes. The voodoo box however, well...there's plenty of documentation about it on this site. Personally I would've bought the no electronics kit, then used a megasquirt.

I'll have to research that, it is not too late, i have not purchased the kit yet, but i will be looking into that for sure. I don't have experience with the ecu tuning aspect of all this but i did build the wire harness in the car, and i really enjoyed that, Hopefully this will be close to the same if i chose the MS. Thanks for the tip!

+1. I would not waste time and money with the voodoo setup with your power goal.

Consider the no electronics kit, plus buying a standalone ECU and injectors yourself elsewhere. I think that would be money well spent.

Thanks! I have an old friend who is handy with the MS, i am sure he will be able to help if i run into problems, plus i hear the MS support is great. I didn't consider it before because i wasn't 100% sure i would be able to set it all up, and i hadn't heard or found anything bad about the Voodoo,,, But, i will go MS on this build now, thanks for the advise!

If it's not too late, DON'T get that voodoo trash. Go straight for a MS, you could find a used one on this forum for the price of a new doodoo box.

AFAIK the doodoo box is still just a signal modifier, right? No timing adjustments. I wouldn't want to track a 230whp car with statically retarded timing. That's just asking for trouble.

If you wanted a street car that would pass OBD-II checks, I'm sure it's a great piece. But if you want >200whp and reliability, then you want an MS.

All that makes complete sense, thank you all again,., This car wont see the street again, so emotions are not a concern. And i see that the MS is cheaper than the upgraded Hydra that i was considering as an alternative. So it seems like i will stick with the kit minus the Voodoo and then get the Ms to control it all.
