Hi. My first MAZDA MIATA lasted 400 miles!

Hi!

I just registered here, amazed over that "Cake" wasn't taken as username!
I am from Trondheim, Norway, I'm currently working with vinyl wrapping cars.
I got my MAZDA MIATA last summer, 1999 1.8 NB, bone stock. After that i have gotten new wheels with semi-slics and Lotus Elise Probax seats. Haven't gotten around to making the seat brackets yet, so still rocking the oem seats.
I need the Elise seats for the extra roof clearence as i am 196cm tall...

I drove my MAZDA MIATA for about 700 km (430 miles) before i noticed a weird sound at certain engine speeds. Fast forward a couple of weeks me and my buddies concluded with it was something with the rods or maybe pistons. Then I began my first engine pull.
Now i've gotten the engine completly torn down and have deliverd the block and crankshaft to an engine-shop wich will measure everything to see what they will need to do to get it safe for assembly.

I am considering going turbo, but have not made up my mind yet.

Yesterday i got it towed to the garage me and my buddies just started renting. For the first time I have a dry and warm place to wrench during the cold, dark Norwegian winter! So excited about the project! Love this little car:hsugh:

Heck yeah man! I've got a nice garage spot for mine this winter too.. and lot's of goodies. I feel your excitement. Good luck with the build!

Yeah! It makes for a really big difference!

Thanks!

Welcome
Did you find the problem?

Cake 11-05-2017 04:48 PM

Thanks.

Kind of! crankshaft, rod, and cam bearings were worn quite bad, cylinder walls were not looking too good either. Might have to machine the cylinders up one size or two to fix that. Still waiting for the engine-shop to measure everything to see if that is necessary:) also the crankshaft needs some polishing.

i think it just used up so much of the engine oil, so the pressure dropped.

It couldn't stand being called a yata anymore, so it killed itself.

quoted because this is what I thought when I read the title. Nice car, poor choice of made-up words.

I actually liked this guy, until he used that term. Now I'm not so sure
Hopefully he'll redeem himself.

Cake 11-06-2017 01:20 AM

Wooops! Thought this was a common term..:noob:
Have redeemed myself and the first post now!

18psi 11-06-2017 01:40 AM

Haha ok now I like this guy again

The reason we hate that term is because it’s commonly used by stancebroz and the typical ricer scum cause they think it’s hip

It seems to be turning into a common term, just not here.
It's ok, I was just giving you shit.
We do that here.

Welcome to The Forum. I think we've got a couple of other members in Norway. Do you have plans to drive your car on a racetrack next year?

Cake 11-06-2017 08:06 AM

Allright!😅

Sort of. I had some issues with the oil pressure dropping to 0, and found out a bit too late that there was nearly no oil left..

Upon engine dissasembly I discovered basicly all the plain bearings were worn quite bad, but hopefully not so much that the crankshaft needs replacement. Also the cylinder walls might need some work😔

Thank you!
Nice, I hope to get in touch with someone with a turbo'd Miata from Norway:) Actually this year there has been maybe three or four miatas for sale with turbos, so they do exist!

Absolutely! Turbo or no turbo, I'm going to our nearest track wich is located in Sweden just 3 hours from here, next summer. Me and my buds have been there several times with cars and motorcycles, and it is so much fun. I've never driven a car on the track before tho, only my bike. (Husaberg FS650 2007 Supermotard)

Here is the track!

Its called Molanda Raceway, and its in Järpen (Sweeden)

Also, how do I add an avatar to my user? I've probably used 30 minutes or so searching for this option but can't seem to find it

You have to be a supporting member.
It's $3.50 USD a month.

Ahh, fair enough:)

You're making me feel good about mine, got about 700mi before my death rattle began.

Cake 11-23-2017 01:45 AM

Haha, yes. Twice my length!

Death rattle, that didn't sound too good! Was the bearings shot in yours too?

Btw, finally decided to go turbo! Block is getting machined up one size soon, and they're gonna take of some material from the top of the block aswell. Gonna deliver the head to Norway's engine-head-guru in an couple of weeks, to get some machining done!

Have already ordered Wiseco pistons, and i'm going for Manley-rods, and ACL-bearings :D

Connecting rod bearing went for me. Went cheap the cheap route, got cheap results.
