Hello everyone. I h. ave always liked miatas ever since my dad whip one when I had my learners permit when I was 16. He owns a used car dealership and I've always known about cars and was able to drive any car I wanted. IIRC they were a 92 and a 2000. Both were a blast to drive and I really got to push them in the twisties. I am looking into getting rid of my 1981 Toyota pickup and getting a miata for tracking and DD. Basically I want one that is trackable and possibly enter some SCCA races but still be able to cruise the streets.

Now for my first question. Do you guys see an issue in buying a higher mileage one for cheap and driving it till it breaks then rebuilding the engine with good components that can handle boost. I have a shop at my disposal with 2 lifts and a slew of awesome tools, and I'm an okay mechanic.

As long as the body is in good shape with little to no rust then high millage is not a factor IMO.

Where are you located in NE

Easy to make a street Miata trackable, hard to make it be able to enter SCCA races and still be streetable. SCCA, and any other sanctioning body mandates a roll cage for wheel to wheel racing. If you are really thinking about doing wheel to wheel racing, check out specmiata.com. There are guys that street drive spec miata racers, not comfortable, not daily driven, but you CAN drive one to and from events if you are desperate.

That being said, there are lots and lots of events in your general area on race tracks in which you can drive a street Miata, with a roll bar. These are both lapping days and time trial events, one car versus the clock. You can have a pretty busy summer with that car just going to Lime Rock, which is close to home for you. My local SCCA region's forum is compiling a list of lapping days/time trial days in the Northeast, if you are interested I can get you a link.

Grassroots Motorsports. It's not Miata specific -- it covers all kinds of DIY wrenching and low-cost racing stuff, but as you might expect, the editors think very highly of the Miata so it gets a lot of coverage.
