Hi...Newb in Ca

First time posting on a forum. (Any forum, ever...)

I've been building cars for about 15yrs, I got hooked on the Miata the first time I drove one back in 04'. Bought a supercharged 92' with an auto in 05", blew the motor in 06", so I decided to convert it to 5sp and build a forged turbo engine. Unfortunately I have too many projects (Corrado, Porsche 914/V8, 71' Duster, Grad School), so the Miata went on the back burner.

I've been lurking around, gathering information for my build a while now. There are some ideas/questions I'm hoping everyone can help me with.
 • HLA tick
 • Boost curves
 • MS setup

I will try and get some photos posted as soon as possible. I tend respond/upload whenever I have time. (school/family/work obligations)

Welcome. Those aren't questions btw. What about those three things do you want to know?

You seem to be doing good for a first time ever poster, just use the search function available on this site for miata/turbo specific questions, or google for more generic questions. If you can't find your answer that way, THEN post about it.

We love pictures here. They help us remember what kind of car/setup you have, and they'll help us diagnosis any issues you may have, or even one you don't know about. Again, welcome.

Where are you located in California, and how did you get your turbo miata to pass emissions?

WonTon 12-28-2010 01:46 AM

Being a OBD1 chassis helps make it easier, 96 and up is OBDII and is an utter PITA!

Seamore 12-28-2010 02:08 AM

If I remember this correctly, the difference is OBDII have a plug in so the emission guys can plug in and pull codes. So if you get an OBDI unless there is light on, emission guys can't tell?

The other issue, with turbo, can you pass sniff test?

WonTon 12-28-2010 02:13 AM

PNP ECU dont send emmisiona codes (sucks for OBDII)

Now with OBDI you can fun a full PNP ECU and not have to worry about that casue they shove a probe up your tailpipe to read the outputs. you can mess with turning your can to pass a OBDI test fairly simply...

The problem with smogging a car here in California is the visual inspection. I have a few friends who work at smog stations, and they don't care whether I have modified the engine or not, only if I can get the tailpipe emissions within the requirements. WonTon is correct about OBDI and OBDII. It is much easier to smog an early Miata, which is one of the reasons why I chose a 92'.

I teach a class on engine technology at the local University which gives me access to a exhaust gas analyzer and a chassis dyno. I've been able to do some load simulations, BSFC, and emission testing. One of my goals with my new engine is to reduce the emissions while increasing the HP and gas mileage.

Here are some photos.

I have done little to the Miata over the last few years (busy with other projects). I expect to start working on it again over the winter, and have the new engine installed by summer.http://picasaweb.google.com/crowder9...24528723724354

This is one of the projects I've been busy with.http://picasaweb.google.com/crowder9...30308766296178
