Hi from Stuttgart

My name is Thomas Müller. I'm from Stuttgart/Germany. I previously owned a RX7 Turbo II wich seemed to be a bit too hot for me... in other words: It started burning when I drove it one night because a marten tried to eat my fuel line.

The car was my hobby so I needed a new one to work on at the weekends. I found an imported canadian Miata with hardtop for 800€ in Ebay and bought it unseen. The car was a real surprise. It was completely rust-free and just needed some minor fixes and new paint because the pre owner tried to paint the car black but was not really gifted when it came to painting.

I allready fixed the paint, installed a flyin miata link ecu which I got really cheap (150€) did all the necessary maintenance stuff stuff including a new timing belt, new fluids, new gaskets, new hydraulic valve lifters and so on. I also installed the bigger 4 piston front brakes from a RX7 for more safety (and because I killed the small original disk brakes while having some fun at a lokal race track:rofl:). Ofcourse I spent some money for a better suspension, too.

Here are some pictures:

First what was left after my RX7 burned down:

How it looks like at the moment. Got some square headlights because I didn't like the round ones:

Some weeks ago i decided it was time for more power. I allready managed to get my RX7 to 350hp all on my own so I guess I will be able to build a nice turbo setup for my Miata with some help from the forum. I want to get round about 200 hp with the stock 1.6l engine and a T25 turbo and maybe build a second engine with some better internals later if I get bored.:naughty:

AAAAND there is allready my first question: How much psi would I have to run with my 1.6l engine and said T25 Turbo out of a 200SX to get my 200hp. and what would be the maximum pressure with my stock engine?

curly 04-15-2014 04:33 PM

There's no maximum pressure, every turbo is different. I've got pretty much the same T25 I believe, and it's at 11-12psi and 185. So figure about 14-16psi.

The maximum torque is about 200-225 before the rods start to bend. Same for the transmission, it'll start exploding. The transmission is known to be safe if you're a little easy on it, but if you're planning on going above 225ft/lbs I'd upgrade to Manley rods.

WAAAAAAY before all of this you'll destroy your 1.6 rear end and clutch, so upgrade those first. 1.8 diff in the back, and FM/949 clutch is a good start for that part.

Curly is has done exactly what you want to do, 1.6, T25, tracking it. I would start with reading his build thread.

Welcome! I studied in Esslingen last fall, and frequently visited Stuttgart.

Welcome to the site Th0m4s, thanks for joining up!

A new clutch and a better differential are allready on my list.

I just read Curly's thread. Thanks for the tip.:bigtu:

Would 14-16 psi be too much for the engine? I really don't want to bend the rods. If 12 psi would be safer then I'd rather have fun with 185 hp instead of buying a new engine because I want 15 hp more.

The next thing i have to figure out is which manifold would be the best. I want to weld one on my own just because I can and I think it would be more fun to do build as much as i can on my own. The only question is which style I should build. I think bottom mount would be the best because the downpipe wouldn't have to have such a sharp bend but there's that stupid power steering pump. Is it even possible with that pump in place to build such a manifold?

Oh and I'm wondering if I should change the front bumper for one with a bigger air intake or maybe even build a v-mount setup? Going v-mount was a common thing for RX7s and it was very effective but maybe it would just be a waste of time to do that with my Miata. I'm a bit worried about the cooling system because I need to build that stuff really good. I don't want to stop every 15 minutes on the Autobahn because my car can't get the heat away at like 130 mph.:ugh:

bummer about the rx7. Welcome to the board!

You do not need a V-mount to keep it cool. You just need the correct radiator and a nice oil cooler with proper sealing between the bumper mouth and the radiator. 949 Racing makes a good crossflow unit.

Ich wohnte in Augsburg für zwei Jahre. Wilkommen!

Stuttgart was a blast! The basement nightclubs in the old downtown were pretty cool.

Hehe yes Stuttgart is not bad if you're searching for some fun. Just the police knows a bit too much for my taste about what's legal on my car and what isn't:noes:

sixshooter 04-19-2014 08:41 PM

You guys have it rough for car modifications, but not as bad as Switzerland.

sixshooter 04-21-2014 06:49 PM

^I actually understand that but could never have composed it.

psyber_0ptix 04-21-2014 07:45 PM

I've fallen out of practice. It's been 3 years since I've been...but now I'm trying to see what all is required to bring the car over. From what I understand it's ridiculously expensive in terms of insurance and gas to have a car in the first place. TÜV is also a nightmare (federal inspectors for emissions and safety).
