beyond Noob, just did timing work
Hey everybody! My name is Be Yoo. I recently bought a red 1992 Mazda Miata with a GReddy 15g-td40h, leaky greddy bov that comes with the kit, no ic, Supra 305 injectors, vortech FMU 12:1, 8lb. Fidanza flywheel, 6 puck spec stage 3 carbon clutch, yellow koni's, racing beat springs, better engine mounts. Thanks to Miataturbo.Net I am now officially a Proud Miata Owner!
But....... I recently got into a wreck. A car stopped abruptly and I knew my stock brakes couldn't stop in time so I swerved, hit a small tree and somehow my door also got screwed. Here's a pic of my strong,still-running, Miata.
I had no prior experience in mechanics and I still don't know too much. I had to unbend the front chassis using a hand hydrolic press, and roll the fenders, remove a badly bent hood, which was stuck because the damn hood latch, and Miata's seem to have very little room to work with. I only had the craptastic emergency jack that came with the miata. My only tools were an adjustable wrench, screw drivers, a sledgehammer, and glue.
So removing body panels when it's bent out of shape is not for the faint of heart, especially considering I had -$114 dollars in the bank (note negative -$114) almost no tools, no experience(except my first oil change in a miata, windshield wiper motor/connecting arm/wiper installation), and an adjustable wrench that readjusted itself whenever there was too much torque that it could handle, and also the working the condition was outside in the blazing North Carolina Sun (100 degrees sometimes).
That's where my love for the Miata began. It's been giving me trouble ever since, but it's my pride and joy. I am a sophmore at East Carolina University, Army Rotc, Nursing Major, with no money half the time. Busy, hectic lifestyle. But I love my Miata!
So far, I unbent the hood, front chassis, fashioned a ghetto plastic window for the driver side, removed the busted A/C compressor, lines, A/C box, installed a shorted serpentine belt, did the timing TDC (oh God was I scared when I opend it up), waterpump, thermostat, replaced some hoses, fixed some vacuum leaks, and tinkered with the idle control valve, sledge-hammered the door frame so the door could open and close, and sealed up some leaks.
My plan now is to get a new Driver Door, FMIC w/ hks ss bov, Apexi-SAFC, front bumper, new rear finish panel, new paint, and rain-proof my miata.
Any comments?!

Yeah, I learned the hard way. Maybe I should also get a Brembo upgrade. I also hear that Endless makes some great brakes, plus they look sweeet!

1.8 brake kit?
Yeah, this brake kit seem like the most affordable kind. Plus even if I could get some 8 piston Brembo's, I could stop on a dime, but I expect to be ejected from my car through the windshield. Then I would also have to get a new windshield.

Now with timing
How do I know if my timing is off. I did timing with my Miata for the 1st time. I marked it. The cams are in the right place (i,e) and all that good stuff. The guy I bought the Miata from is running 8 deg off base timing. I was an idiot and forgot to take a picture of it before taking off the belt and accidently turning the cams. I found TDC by turning the cams and feeling the 1 cylinder till it was at top. There is no pinging and the car cranks over fine. It even feels smoother. I heard of advanced timing, but like I said, I'm a novice tinkerer at best. There is no hesitation, NO pinging noises, the idle is fine, a bit high (1100rpm at idle) and the response is basically as good as when I first got it from the guy. Just wondering, I need to get more posts so I can go on the other threads. Thanks everyone!
*Note: I had to do the timing to replace waterpump, thermostat. I also removed my busted A/C, compressor, A/C box... now 2nd question. Does removing the A/C and getting a shorter belt affect idle?!!
