The reason for "new tires on the back" is based on the assumption that the newer tires will grip better (certainly true in terms of hydroplaning resistance) and that it's better to understeer than oversteer. That's it.

We have a member here that's in high school and has done quite a bit of stuff with his miata. Just depends on how much you're willing to learn. Having a daily driver is a good idea though...
